After meeting families devastated by carbon monoxide poisoning
while working as a gas service technician, Ben Kuchta decided
to help reduce the deaths, injuries and costs of this silent killer
by self-funding and creating an interlock that would turn off
a defective gas appliance in response to a CO alarm. Here Ben
explains how his invention works and how he created what is
now a globally-patented lifesaving innovation on the path to
becoming one of IGEM’s youngest ever Chartered Engineers
