IGEM HOSTS GAS SAFETY A GAS FROM
WEEK RECEPTION AT THE PAST
SCOTTISH PARLIAMENT By Dominic Cummings, IGEM
London, Southern & Eastern
Section Secretary
IGEM’S LONDON, Southern &
Eastern Section took a trip down
memory lane at Fakenham Gas
Museum, in Norfolk.
This is the only surviving
gasworks in England and Wales,
complete with all the equipment
used for the manufacture of gas from
coal: retorts, condenser, purifiers,
meter and gasholder.
Production of gas from the
heating of coal ceased at this site
in 1965 following the discovery of
natural gas in the North Sea.
The tour of this Scheduled Ancient
Monument provided an insight into
our cultural, social and industrial
heritage by showing how gas was
produced and houses an exhibition
of gas lighting, heating and cooking
equipment from that era.
