Issue 111NEWSLETTER OF THE HISTORY PANELJune 2022THE INSTITUTION OF GAS ENGINEERS & MANAGERSISSN 1475-617XREGISTERED CHARITY No. 287678TheHistoric Gas Times\ years since Mr Hind, well known in London as a builder of several gasworks, and who was an assistant of the late celebrated Mr Winsor, was induced by the Russian Government to go over to St. Petersburgh to erect and superintend the Imperial gas works then about to be established, at a salary of %u00a3 800 per annum. One year's salary was paid him in advance, by way of outfit, and he soon afterwards he sent for his wife and family, who joined him. In this country there are certain perquisites belonging to the engineers of such establishments, amongst which is the superabundant quantity of rough lead offcuts from the pipes where they are joined. These cuttings in large works amount to a considerable quantity, and Mr Hind, considering that he would be entitled to the same perquisites in Russia as in England, sold the cuttings; for which it is understood by his friends that he has been banished to Siberia. The circumstance has attracted considerable attention with scientific mechanics in London, as great inducements are now held out by the Russian government for intelligent individuals to settle in that country. We understand that the directors of the Equitable Gas Company, whose works Mr Hind erected at Vauxhall, have, with a laudable spirit reflecting great credit upon them, presented a memorial to the Russian Ambassador at our court, to request that he will cause an inquiry to be made on the subject of the painful banishment of this individual to Siberia. Mr Hind was well known and highly respected in the profession; and the Independent Gas-works at Haggerstone, so celebrated for commodiousness, were amongst those erected by him. He has also established many of the first companies in the metropolis and several provincial towns and cities of England. Fresh accounts are looked for anxiously by his friends, but it is feared that the report of his banishment to the desolate climes of Siberia is but too true.\From the The Cambrian Newpaper 13th October 1838RUSSIA: CAUTION TO ENGINEERSTYRANNY OF THE RUSSIAN GOVERNMENTThe City gas works, Sydney, was claimed to be the first in the Southern Hemisphere and the first in a British Colony.
