Ankie, or Dr Mrs Borgstein as she was known throughout Malawi, was
born in 1925 in Gouda, in the Netherlands. She was an only child, growing up in
a pre-war bourgeois environment, the puritanical nature of which undoubtedly had
a bearing on her later life. Her schooling and subsequent early years at the
University of Utrecht to study medicine overlapped with World War II and the
German occupation of the Netherlands. The loss of one eye in her teenage years
