Editor’s Notes

          Professor George ‘Sam’ Shepperson, CBE.

Publication of the scheduled digital Special Memorial Edition of the
Society of Malawi Journal celebrating the remarkable life of Professor George
‘Sam’ Shepperson, CBE, has most regrettably had to be postponed due to
unforeseeable circumstances and will now be published later this year. A positive
is that, when published, it should then be able to include an account of his
memorial service and the interment of his ashes which it is anticipated will take
          place later this summer.
It is also proposed that a printed edition will be available for purchase at a
future date. Full details will appear in The Society of Malawi Journal in due
          course.
The above publication will mark only the second Special Memorial Edition
to be published in the 75 year-long history of the Society; the first being a tribute
to the life of Fr. Matthew Schoffeleers which was published in 2011. That, too,
was first published as a digital issue, albeit a pdf, and marked the first occasion
that this Journal was edited by guest editors: Dr. Louis Nthenda and Professor
Lupenda Mphande. It is therefore even more fitting that in the Society’s tribute to
Professor George Shepperson that my role as editor is shared with the Glasgow-
based SoMJ managing editor designate, Dr. John Lwanda, thus conjoining my late
friend and mentor’s Scottish, Malawian and English affiliations, affections and
heritage; a conjunction I know he would have greatly appreciated and much
          enjoyed.

As part of The Society of Malawi’s 75th anniversary celebrations,
members are invited to experience a digital version of both issues of last year’s
(2020) Journal in a format that is currently under consideration. It must be
emphasised that at the present time there is absolutely no intention of ceasing
production of the existing printed Journal in favour of digitisation, which should
be viewed as an innovative, complementary benefit. The following links may be

of The Society of Malawi Journal and then share with us your considered opinions.
We shall greatly look forward to receiving them. Tsalani bwino!
