                                                       TRIBUTES

Toki!!! This was the 1st sound I recognised as a toddler. As time progressed its
various inflections would either send me bounding over happily to the source or
scampering away from it because I had committed another infraction and
wanted to escape punishment. Toki was my mother’s pet name for me and over
time, was used by older family members particularly when they wanted to tease
me or praise me. For her though it was her way of expressing her pride in me
                    and her love for me.

She felt this same pride and love for all of us, her boys, and demonstrated it in
so many ways throughout our lives. She was protective of us, even
overprotective at times, loved us fiercely and was willing to sacrifice all she had
                    for us.

As anyone who knew my mum will attest to, she was a warm, caring, kind and
generous woman but, she was also a strict no-nonsense mother which was
understandable given that all her children were boys, and a very inquisitive
person who was always keen to learn new things.

We lived together for the last 2 years, a choice I am glad I made because it gave
me the opportunity to learn more about her and to appreciate her even more.
We quarrelled frequently because I’m a stubborn person which is a trait I
inherited from her, but always made up within a short time because she loved
                    me and I loved her.

My mom had a strong sense of duty, responsibility and service and was dedicated
to her calling as a doctor - she still went to work 2 days before she fell ill, she
cared for people and couldn’t ‘see any reason why she should sit at home doing
nothing when there were patients to care for’ (in her own words).

Her professional achievements speak for themselves but in spite of all that, she
stayed humble and her integrity was intact.

I was bereft at her passing and I miss her everyday but I am grateful to God for
being the son of this awesome woman who was an Amazon in everything but
                    size.
