Degree Requirements

           Graduate Comprehensive/Qualifying Examination
Candidates for a graduate degree must pass a written comprehensive/qualifying
examination unless otherwise specified by the degree program. The Graduate
School is responsible for the administration of the Comprehensive Examination.

The Comprehensive/Qualifying Examination may not be taken before the student
has completed the minimum graduate core courses required for the program,
including all prerequisite courses. Students enrolled in coursework that will result
in the completion of the minimum core credit hour requirement (24 credits) may,
with the approval of the graduate Program Coordinator and advisor, be allowed
to take the Comprehensive/Qualifying Examination during the same semester.
Students must be advanced to candidacy prior to taking the comprehensive
           examination.

Student in the Counseling Psychology, Mental Health Heath Counseling, and
School Counseling Programs will be required to take the Counseling Preparation
Comprehensive Examination (CPCE) in order to meet the comprehensive
examination requirement. This is a nationally standardized examination used in
many university counselor training programs throughout the United States. The
CPCPE is a multiple choice objective instrument prepared and scored through the
Center for Credentialing and Education, Inc. (http://www.cce-global.org/). Results
are final and cannot be subject to the appeal process through the typical university
           protocol.

Master of Education students must have successfully completed or must be
currently enrolled in EDUC 706 or ESAS 706 Introduction to Research before taking
the Comprehensive Examination. All students registering for a concluding seminar
must have first passed the written Comprehensive Examination.

The Graduate School administers the Comprehensive Examination two times each
year: the fall and spring semesters. The doctoral comprehensive examination in
education is administered only once a year in the fall semester and only students
who fail in an area are eligible to retake the examination in the spring semester.

Students are eligible to take the written comprehensive twice. In the event that a
student fails the examination on the first and second attempts, the student will
           be dismissed from the program.
           Note:
In an event that a student fails the comprehensive examination for the
second time (AFTER TWO ATTEMPTS), the student will be dismissed
from the program. There will not be any further negotiations after a
student fails the comprehensive examination the second time.
                                                                           26
