Leadership Knowledge
1. Knows the qualities, principles, skills, and styles of effective
leadership.
2. Knows strategies of leadership designed to enhance the
learning environment of schools.
3. Knows how to design, implement, manage, and evaluate a
comprehensive school counseling program.
4. Understands the important role of the school counselor as a
system change agent.
5. Understands the school counselor’s role in student assistance
programs, school leadership, curriculum, and advisory
meetings.
Skills and Practices
1. Participates in the design, implementation, management,
and evaluation of a comprehensive developmental school
counseling program.
2. Plans and presents school-counseling-related educational
programs for use with
parents and teachers (e.g., parent education programs,

ASCA, CACREP and MSDE
The School Counseling program is structured according to the
guidelines and standards of the American School Counseling
Association, the Council of the Accreditation of Counseling Education
and Related Programs and the Maryland State Department of
Education. The School Counseling Program is certified by the
Maryland State Department of Education for meeting the state
requirements. The program is guided by the standards of the Council
of the Accreditation of Counseling Education and Related Programs
and the roles and responsibilities of the professional school counselor
as set out by the American School Counseling Association. The School
Counseling program is also considered a National Board of Certified
Counselors approved graduate program. The School Counseling
program provides a dual purpose; with the addition of 12 credits,
