was gassing up his patrol car when the gunman approached from behind, shot him in the back and shot him again as he lay on the ground, officials said.
While the motive behind the shooting remains unclear, officials were quick to link the incident to Black Lives Matter, the series of demonstrations against police misconduct. Goforth was white, Mr. Miles is Black.
The fatal shooting comes eight months after two New York police officers were am- bushed by a gunman who had said he wanted to avenge the deaths of Black men in con- frontations with police.
HOUSTON, TX -- The killing of a sheriff’s deputy on Friday in a Houston suburb was unprovoked, a county sheriff said, saying the victim was a target because of his uni- form.
"It appears to be clearly un- provoked," said Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman on Saturday, speaking of Friday's shooting of Darren Goforth at a gas station.
Sheriff's deputies on Satur- day arrested Shannon Miles, 30, who will be charged with capital murder for the shooting, which Hick- man said was captured on surveillance video.

Black Lives Matter Demonstrate To Minnesota State Fair
Demonstrators at the Minnesota State fair.
ST. PAUL, MN -- The Black Lives Matter demonstration at the State Fair has ended, and the crowd of about 325 marchers has dispersed after a peaceful protest at the fairgrounds.
The march began this morn- ing at Hamline Park in St. Paul. Demonstrators marched one and a half miles up Snelling Av- enue to the fairground. They were escorted by St. Paul Police on bikes and horses. They chanted as they walked, with calls of "No justice, no peace" and "Hands up, don't shoot," a chant that has been repeated across the country since the riots in Ferguson, Mo., after the
death of Michael Brown.
At one point, the group devi- ated from their announced route and gathered in front of the gates on Como Avenue. Some protesters attempted to enter the fair, but were stopped by po-
lice.
The group gathered at the
Snelling Avenue entrance for a number of speeches by organiz- ers of Black Lives Matter - St. Paul. Organizers called for body cameras on all city police offi- cers. They also called on the U. S. Department of Justice to in- vestigate the fatal police shoot- ing of Marcus Golden last January.
