Members Of New Mt. Zion Earn Several Awards At Deacons’ Convention

Winners: Deshaewn Rhodes, 2nd place, Spelling Bee; Tress Ja- cobs, Essay contest winner; and Caroline Jones, 1st place, Adults Arts and Crafts.
The National Baptist Dea- cons Convention of America, Inc. and its Auxiliaries held its 2016 session in Richmond, VA, July 18-22nd. The organization is “celebrating 82 years of Christian service.”
Several members of the New Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church “Saving Our Children” Program went on the trip, which included sites in New York. They were accompanied by adult chaperones and youth directors.
Several of the youth and adults returned to Tampa with trophies and awards.
Tress V. Jacobs was the
overall first place winner of the essay contest, following the theme for the Deacons’ Con- vention, “Modeling Jesus in Everything,” Philippians 2:5.
Tress will be a freshman at the Academy of The Holy Names during the 2016/17 school year. She is an avid reader and reads an average of two books per week. She uses her reading skills to help facil- itate her homework assign- ments.
Tress has also performed in her school plays and musical productions. She performed at the "Strawberry Festival" as a member of The Leonard Acad-
emy of Dance and in the pro- duction of the “Chocolate Nut- cracker."
In addition to reading, she loves to play chess and the drums.
Tress is a member of New Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where she sings in the Youth Choir and is a member of the “Saving Our Children” Pro- gram. She is the daughter of Mrs. Angelita Fort DuPree
and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence (Yvonne) Fort.
Other winners at the con- vention were: Deshawn Rhodes, who won 2nd place in the Spelling Bee.

Age 3-6: Anari Scott - 2nd Place; age 7-9: Vontreaz Cowen - 1st Place; Ti'antaye Hall - 3rd Place; Ma'Caria Wilson - 4th Place; age 10-12:
Sannitra Cowen - 1st Place; Quaneal Cowen - 2nd Place; age 13-15: Viryonna Thomp- son - 1st Place; adults: Caro- line Jones - 1st Place; and Yvonne Fort - 2nd Place.
Bettye Grant received the Christian Service Award and Mr. and Mrs. Theron (An- nette) James, Sr. were crowned as Florida’s King and Queen.
