FRED HEARNS Tampa Historian
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Since its inception, the Florida State Fair has desig- nated a special “Student’s Day at the Fair.” This year, the fair will be in town from February 9th through Febru- ary 20th. Student’s Day will take place on Friday, Febru- ary 10th.
There will be many activi- ties geared toward all ages. And one of those attractions is the 2nd Annual Florida State Fair “Salute to Black History” Exhibit. The exhibit is the result of a partnership between the Hillsborough County School District and the Florida State Fair Black History Commit- tee.
This year, the exhibits will be on display in The Florida Center, and open to the pub- lic every day. However, on Student’s Day, those in atten- dance will have an opportu- nity to visit special exhibits planned by students, sorori- ties, fraternities, churches, community organizations and others.
Mrs. Minerva Span- ner Morrow, Chief Diver- sity Officer for the Hillsborough County School District, said last year, there were 12 exhibits. This year, 17 of the 27 displays will repre- sent Hillsborough County Schools.
The theme this year is

from each school were given a chance to select a project for display. Those in atten- dance will tour the exhibits created by these students that feature artwork on dis- play and other attractions that depicts the achieve- ments of either a local or na- tional figure.
Attendees will also have a chance to revisit the fight for equality and civil rights through film clips from the sit-ins in downtown Tampa to displays chronicling the contributions of African Americans ranging from board members to educators.
Fred Hearns, Tampa Historian said, “The Florida State Fair dates back nearly 100 years and there was al- ways a Negro Exhibit. This is nothing new, but it went away for some reason, but now it is back and has been revised.”
The exhibits will be on display until 9 p.m. for the duration of the Fair, but there are a series of special events planned for Student’s Day. The special events will begin at 10 a.m., and other activities are planned for throughout the day.
They include an appear- ance by Tony and Lauren Dungy, Kan Dance Studios, the Salvation Army Brass Band, Bles’d Productions, Black on Black Rhyme, Howard W. Blake Warrior Poets, Dynasty: Hip Hop Artists, and more.
