Grandmother’s Valentine’s Day Gala

Children With A Vision, Inc. and Our Sisters, Our Friends, Inc. will present its 2017 Motown Extravaganza Grandmother’s Valentine’s Day Gala. The event, cele- brating the 5th anniversary, will be held on Saturday, February 11th, 4-8 p. m. at University Area Community Center, 14013 N. 22nd St., Tampa 33613. The event is being sponsored by Hooters.
“These grandparents are raising 2nd and 3rd generation grandchildren. They’ll be chaperoned and catered to by nearly 200 male youth
from the community,” states Mrs. Tonya Lewis, one of the founders of the event along with Mrs. Sheila Youngblood.
The young men escorts, ages 7-18, will represent: Men Of Vision, The Walk Group, Male, Inc., Saving Our Sons, and The Walters Academy for Entrepreneur- ship and more.
Gifts for the grandmoth- ers will range from an ele- gant 5-star dinner to roses.

Moffitt Cancer Center Establishes George Edgecomb Society To Address Cancer Disparities
Moffitt Cancer Center’s efforts to conduct research addressing racial disparities in cancer have a new source of community support, cre- ated in memory of a local
screening, diagnosis and pre- vention over the past decades, it has been slower for the Black/African-Amer- ican community,” notes B. Lee Green, Ph.D., Moffitt Vice President of Diversity, Public Relations and Strate- gic Communications.
“This community contin- ues to face higher cancer rates and cancer deaths in comparison to other commu- nities.”
Contributions from mem- bers of the George Edgecomb Society will underwrite the research and clinical efforts of Moffitt scientists focused on these cancer disparities. Membership is open to all with many giving levels. Those who contribute $1,000 or more annually will also have a voice in deciding which research efforts are underwritten with society funds.

Supporters will have a chance to learn more about the newly created George Edgecomb Society at a kick- off event on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 6 p. m. in Moffitt’s Vin- cent A. Stabile Research Building. Grammy Award- winning R&B hip-hop artist Paul Anthony of Full Force will share details of his cancer experience. Kathy Sledge of Sister Sledge and Alia Davis from Allure will perform with him.
The George Edgecomb Society honors the memory of a close friend of H. Lee Moffitt. When the judge died of cancer in 1976, it spurred then-state legislator Moffitt to create what has

become the only National Cancer Institute Comprehen- sive Cancer Center based in Florida.
Moffitt Cancer Center es- tablished the George Edge- comb Society to keep his legacy alive by ensuring equi- table health outcomes and eliminating cancer health disparities among Blacks/African-Americans.
