A Hillsborough County middle school teacher was ar- rested Friday afternoon and charged with child abuse. She is accused of slapping a stu- dent in her classroom.
According to the Hillsbor- ough County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to Giunta Middle School, 4202 Falkenburg Road, in Riverview just before noon. A 13-year-old male student re- ported that his teacher, Ms. Sheila Vakili, struck him in the face during class.
Deputies talked with the victim as well as several other students who were in the classroom. Police said their stories were consistent stating that the victim made a pro- fane comment during class.
Ms. Valiki reportedly heard the comment and be- lieved the student had called her a profane name. The stu- dents told police that the teacher then slapped the vic- tim in his face with enough force to cause redness and swelling.
The student’s parents were contacted. Ms. Valiki refused to be interviewed by

deputies at the advice of her attorney and a representative from the teacher’s union, po- lice said.
She was taken into cus- tody and charged with simple battery, child abuse.
Sheriff Chad Chronis- ter said, “The safety of our Hillsborough County stu- dents is something we take very seriously. A teacher is supposed to be a role model to the young people in their classrooms and set an exam- ple for how to behave, even at a time of frustration.
“It is never acceptable for a teacher to become physi- cally violent with a student.”
Police arrested a Tampa woman last week after she re- portedly made a public post- ing on her Facebook account. She was charged with written threats to commit a mass shooting or terrorism.
According to the Hillsbor- ough County Sheriff’s Office, Ms. Juliana Joy Cote, 26, admitted to making the post- ing. It contained a photo- graph of a fake firearm threatening to “shoot every- one” at the nearest elemen- tary school.
Investigators said Egypt Lake Elementary School was close to her home.
Shortly after being made aware of the post, detectives went to Ms. Cote’s home in

the 3100 block of W. Lam- bright Street. They inter- viewed and arrested her at her home.
Police did not indicate why she made the post or if she is connected to the school in any way.
