Roy Hibbert Reportedly Hired By 76ers To Join Coaching Staff
ROY HIBBERT
Former NBA center Roy Hibbert has joined the Philadelphia 76ers staff as a player development coach, ac- cording to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.
Hibbert last played in the NBA in 2016-17, spending nine seasons in the league. He was a two-time All-Star and a second-team All-Defensive player in 2013-14.
No player illustrates the NBA's shift away from tradi- tional centers better than Hi- bbert. Five years ago, he was an integral member of an In- diana Pacers squad that reached its second straight Eastern Conference Finals. Even during the 2013-14 sea- son—when his stock started slipping—he averaged 10.8 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.2 blocks.
Basketball Star Yoeli
Childs 9 Games For
Improper Draft Process
It turns out Yoeli Childs’ return to BYU basketball for his senior season isn’t all roses after all.
The NCAA, when reinstat- ing Childs’ eligibility after he withdrew from the NBA Draft, has suspended the star forward for nine games to open the 2019-20 season, the school announced Friday.
NCAA rules allow under- classmen to enter the NBA Draft and sign with an agent to arrange workouts and travel, but later withdraw from the draft and cut ties with the agent, allowing them to return to school and keep eligibility. Agents are allowed to cover certain expenses dur- ing that time.
This is a process most re- cently used by players like Childs and Weber State

guard Jerrick Harding. But in Childs’ case, the NCAA “determined that Childs’ signing with an agent was impermissible due to the fact that he signed before fil- ing paperwork required by the NCAA,” the statement from
BYU said.
BYU appealed the suspen-
sion to no avail.
U. S. gymnastics cham- pion Simone Biles won a record-tying sixth all-around title at the U. S. Gymnastics Championships in Kansas City, Missouri Sunday night, and became the first woman to land a triple-double dur- ing floor exercise competi- tion in the process, according to Team USA.
The 22-year-old took the top scores on floor, vault and balance beam but placed third on bars.
On Friday night, she be- came the first gymnast to at- tempt and land a
double-twisting double som- ersault dismount of the high beam, Team USA said.
Biles' sixth title tied the U. S. mark by Clara Schroth Lomady in the 1940s and 1950s, when the AAU awarded national titles, according to Team USA.
The latest competition was seen as the start of Biles' preparation for the 2020 Olympics.
She's already a four-time Olympic gold medalist and will head to Tokyo as the prohibitive favorite, ob- servers said.
Serena Williams
Consoled By Opponent
After Retiring With Injury
In Rogers Cup Final
On Sunday, Serena Williams was forced to withdraw from the Rogers Cup Finals due to an injury, giving her opponent Bianca Andreescu the win.
Trailing 3-1 in the first set, Williams called for a medical timeout. Less than a minute later, the umpire an- nounced that Williams was retiring from the match, giv- ing hometown hero An- dreescu the win, making her the first Canadian to win the Rogers Cup in 50 years.
The 23-time Grand Slam winner was visibly upset, sit- ting on her bench looking down at the ground and wip- ing away tears.
Instead of celebrating, her opponent went over and gave her a pep talk.
When Andreescu real-

ized she was about to win, in- stead of celebrating, she went over to Williams’ side and consoled the 37-year-old ten- nis pro in an incredible mo- ment of sportsmanship.
After a few seconds, Williams was smiling.
Williams and An- dreescu were going head to head at the Rogers Cup in Toronto, Canada.
