LSU will play Clemson for the 2020 College Football Playoff National Champi- onship at 8 ET tonight, Mon- day, Jan. 13, in New Orleans.
Both teams are 14-0 going into the game. LSU is hoping to win its first CFP title (and first national title since the 2007 season, in the BCS era). Clemson is trying to win its second consecutive champi- onship and third of the CFP era.
Most of the experts and critics pick LSU to win, but the Sentinel pick Clemson.
So, can anyone slow down
NO. 1 LSU AND HEISMAN WINNER JOE BURROW VS. NO. 3 CLEMSON
TREVOR LAWRENCE
LSU?
Shutting down the Tigers
probably isn't possible. But can even mighty Clemson keep Heisman winner Joe Burrow in check?
But if one team can do it, Clemson is a top candidate. Not only are the Tigers the de- fending national champions, but they fought back from a 16-point deficit to rally past Ohio State in the semifinals, 29-23, with the defense turn- ing things around after a rough start. Plus Clemson has its own offensive stars.
Trevor Lawrence had 259 passing yards and 107 rushing yards against OSU, with a ridiculous 67-yard touchdown run stunning the Buckeyes. Clemson also has RB Travis Etienne, who has more than 1,500 rushing yards on the season.
Jimmy Johnson, Troy Aikman Tear Up In Live Hall Of Fame Announcement
JIMMY JOHNSON AND TROY AIKMAN
Jimmy Johnson fought back the emotion as long as he could.
It was announced on live television Sunday that John- son would be joining the for- mer Steelers coach in the 2020 Pro Football Hall of Fame class.
Johnson, who won two Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys, was fighting back tears as Hall of Fame president David Baker told him of his selection during halftime of the Packers-Seahawks divi- sional round game.
The news led to a huge re- action from Hall of Famer and longtime television partner Terry Bradshaw, who hugged Johnson and yelled, “Oh my God that is awesome!”
Fox then cut to an emo- tional Troy Aikman, the coach’s Hall of Fame quarter- back in Dallas, who was on the call in Green Bay.
Russell Wilson Rallies Seahawks,
Malik Turner Late Drop Seals
Playoff Loss To Packers
Marshawn Lynch got into the middle of a stunned Seahawks locker room and gave an impassioned speech to the team he returned to when it needed him most.
“It was intimate,” Russell Wilson said.
Jadeveon Clowney col- lapsed to his knees on famed Lambeau Field when it ended. He was spent. He was pained. And he was crushed.
K.J. Wright sat with his head down, silently, for many minutes. Tre Flowers stared ahead across the quiet room still in full uniform while everyone else had removed theirs.
Wilson? The Seahawks’ franchise quarterback and cor- nerstone smiled.
“Five minutes left, we get the ball back? I thought the game was going to be over,” he said. “Thought we were going to win it. I think everybody in the stadium, everybody watch- ing, felt that, too.”
Wilson had the ball, and the season, in his hands.
Then Malik Turner had the ball, and the season, in his hands, too.
But Turner dropped it.
The Seahawks got smacked around by Green Bay in the first half of this NFC divi- sional-playoff game Sunday night at Lambeau Field, falling behind by 18 points. Then
RUSSELL WILSON
Wilson and the Seahawks ral- lied. Yet again, in this season of slow starts and flourishing finishes.
Lynch scored two touch- down on short runs, his third and fourth in three games of his Seahawks return. The de- fense suddenly started stop- ping Aaron Rodgers. The Seahawks trailed 28-23 and Wilson had the ball with 5 minutes left. Lambeau was full of nervous noise.
Turner then dropped a pass that would have put Seat- tle into Packers territory on the Seahawks’ final possession. Wilson took a third-down sack. Coach Pete Carroll de- cided fourth and 11 on his side of the field was too long to go for it and punted. The defense could not stop Rodgers on two third and longs.
And the Seahawks’ rally fell short in an excruciating, 28-23 loss to the Packers that ended another season on the road in the division round.
'It Feels Good': Serena Williams Ends 3-Year Title Drought
Serena Williams ended a three-year title drought when she beat fellow Ameri- can Jessica Pegula 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday to win the singles final at the ASB Classic.
Williams hadn't won a title since the Australian Open in January 2017, and not since she became a mother to her daughter Olympia, who was court-side to see the victory.
"It feels good. It's been a long time," Williams said. "I think you can see the relief on my face.
