Last week, Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan pre- sented grants to various not- for-profit organizations in the community. The grants are de- signed to help the organiza- tions continue their work in the community.
Chief Dugan presented a check for $1,000 to Ms.
Olatha Leggett, of Corner- stone Kids, Inc. The after- school program is housed at the St. James House of Prayer, 2708 N. Central Avenue.
It provides a safe and nur- turing environment for chil- dren, Monday through Friday, from 2:30 p.m. until 5:40 p.m. The program is free for the 35 at-risk children who attend and live in Tampa Heights.
The students receive men-
toring and help with their homework each day. They also receive a hot meal while there.
The grant will allow Cor- nerstone Kids, Inc., to imple- ment its “Being A Reader Program.” The goal of the pro- gram is to ensure that students have the basic foundation and skills needed to become suc- cessful readers.
It is provided once a week for 60 to 90 minutes and is ad- ministered by four instructors and two to four volunteers.
Chief Dugan also pre- sented a check in the amount of $1,500 to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Parade Foun- dation. Robert Scott, Jr., Horace Drew, and Howard Harris were on hand to accept the check.
That funding is earmarked to provide opportunities to youth to learn skills to become the next generation of leaders in their respective communi- ties. The Foundation has al- ready implemented a college scholarship award program for high school seniors who have demonstrated academic excel- lence and community service. The Leadership Academy will focus on younger children.
The Foundation will use the funding for activities high- lighting the principles of non- violence, safe and positive interactions with law enforce- ment and work on public speaking and debate strategies as demonstrated by Dr. King.
Chief Dugan also pre- sented $5,000 to Starting Right Now and $2,500 to Proj- ect Link.
90th Birthday
