On Saturday, February 6th, family members and friends gathered at the Florida State Fairgrounds for the 2016 An- nual Florida State Fair Diver- sity Appreciation Wall of Fame Inductions. This year, the African American in- ductees were Dr. Walter L. Smith and the late Doug Jamerson, Florida Commis-
sioner of Education.
Dr. Smith has achieved
numerous milestones in edu- cation on a local, state, na- tional, and international level. He has amassed accomplish- ments ranging from becom- ing President of his college alma mater, to becoming a published author.
The late Commissioner of
Education, Doug Jamer- son, and Victoriano Man- teiga, founder of La Gaceta newspaper, were selected as “Historical Honorees.”

Higher Education Scholarships
Hillsborough County Social Serviced has partnered with the Com- munity Action Board (CAB) to offer $5,000 scholarships to eligible students wishing to continue their education by attending an insti- tution of higher learning.
Applications for scholarships for the 2016-2017 school year will be accepted through Friday, April 29, 2016.
Applicants must be between 17 and 22 years old, have a high school diploma or GED equivalent (16-year-old graduating seniors may also apply), reside in Hillsborough County, household income must fall within 125% of Federal Poverty Guidelines of Community Services Block Grant; community service and school involvement, letters of recommendation, academic record, essay response and panel interview participation.
