Helper’ Dies

County, died of
natural causes at
her home Friday morning. Mrs.
Reeder was 100-years-old.

MR. JAMES ARTHUR DAVIS
Mr. James Arthur “Jim” Davis, 86, of Tallahassee, FL, passed at home, surrounded by his loving family on Thursday morning, March 17, 2016.
A native of Apopka, FL, Jim graduated high school, and served two years as an Infantryman during Korean War.
He enrolled at Florida A&M University under the G.I. Bill, earning his Bache- lor’s degree in Industrial Arts Education and his Mas- ter’s in Administration and Supervision.
He later served as Depart- ment Head for Industrial Arts, Jones High School and as Principal at Taft Elemen- tary and Phyllis Wheatley High.
He then began a long, il- lustrious career with the Florida Department of Edu- cation, serving in several ca- pacities including Bureau Chief.
Jim concluded his career as Executive Assistant to the President of Florida A&M, serving as the University’s official representative (lob- byist) for governmental rela- tions and legislative affairs.
He was well-known as an avid hunter, outdoorsman, horseman, gun collector and environmentalist.
Jim’s love and legacy will forever remain in the hearts of: his former wife, friend and mother of his children, Winnie Jones Davis; chil- dren, Kha White-Davis, Jacqueline Davis, H. Christo- pher (Denisa) Davis and Regina Davis; nine grand- children and four great grandchildren; surrogate sons, Clayton J. Clark and Randy Erving; and many nieces, nephews, other rela- tives and friends.
A memorial service com- memorating the life and times of Jim Davis will be at 2 p. m., Saturday, April 2 at the Tallahassee Antique Au- tomobile Museum, 6800 Mahan Dr., Tallahassee 32306.

MRS. DORA L. REEDER June 28, 1915 — March 18, 2016
Mrs. Reeder retired as the Principal of Dunbar Elementary School at the end of 1984. Her re- tirement closed out a 47-year ca- reer as an educator.
Following in her grand- mother’s footsteps, Mrs. Reeder decided to become an educator at an early age. After graduating from Bartow High School, she continued her education at (then) Bethune-Cookman College.
After graduating, Mrs. Reeder launched her teaching career in Live Oak, Florida, in 1933. During the summer, she worked on obtaining her Bachelor of Science Degree from Tuskegee Institute.
She also worked as a substitute teacher in Hillsborough County. After obtaining her undergraduate degree, Mrs. Reeder was hired as a classroom teacher and as- signed to Lomax Elementary School, where she taught for about 3 years.
In her next assignment, Mrs. Reeder was chosen to serve as a Teacher’s Helper. She was the first African American to serve in this capacity. Her role was to provide assistance to incoming teachers and others, teaching them new materials. She held the County- wide position for 3 years. Her next position was to serve at Dunbar Elementary School as its principal in 1960. During her tenure there, she guided the school through in- tegration. She retired from Dun- bar Elementary School in December 1984, having dedicated 47-1/2 to educating children.
Following retirement, Mrs. Reeder remained active in the community and was appointed to a three-year term as a member of the Tampa-Hillsborough County Library Board. She also served as the organization’s Chairperson.
A Tampa native, Mrs. Reeder was the recipient of numerous awards and commendations. She was presented an award for dedi- cated service by the State Library Council and was chosen as “Parent of the Year” at the 72nd Annual Scholarship Convocation at Tuskegee University. She was nominated for the honor by her granddaughter, Angela.
She was also a longtime mem- ber of St. James House of Prayer Episcopal Church. She was chosen as the Director of the Tampa Deanery of Episcopal Women, be- coming the first Black woman to serve in that capacity.
Mrs. Reeder is survived by two children, numerous grand- children, and other family mem- bers and friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Reeder will be held on Saturday. Ray Williams Funeral Home is in charge of handling arrangements.
