Almost Christmas- St. Pete native Will Packer (producer) and Director David Talbert (Baggage Claim) put together a hilarious comedy/drama about a dysfunctional family gathering together for their first Christmas since their mother died. Aunt May(Mo’Nique) was off the chain funny. Also starring Kim- berly Elise, Danny Glover, Omar Epps, J.B. Smoove and Gabrielle Union. Must-see for laughs. Made $25M (budget-$17M)- ****
Doctor Strange- A former neurosurgeon (Benedict Cumberbatch) unexpectantly embarks on a su- pernatural journey of healing with his masters (Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton) only to be drawn into a war against a former master (Mads Mikkelsen). Might be the best Marvel movie with the screenplay, special effects and action. Must-see! Check it out in IMAX/3D. Director Scott Derrickson scored on this film. Made U.S-$181M/ foreign- $390M- (budget-$165M)- ***** classic.
Boo! A Madea Halloween- Madea (Tyler Perry) and her friends (Cassie Davis, Patrice Lovely) babysit Madea’s misbehaving niece on Halloween. Perry scored on the screenplay. I must admit this Madea’s movie had me laughing throughout. Madea’s friends were funny. Must-see for laughs. Made - $72M (budget- $20M) - ****
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back- Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) returns to help a friend (Cobie Smulders) uncover the truth behind a government crime she didn’t commit. Reacher also uncovers a potential secret from his past that could change his life forever. The first film was better. A must-see for Cruise fans. A little long 2hrs/10mins. Made $56M ( budget-$60M)- ***1/2
The Girl On The Train- A disturbed divorcee (Emily Blunt) becomes entangled in a missing persons investigation that makes her look even more crazier. A psychological thriller for adults. Started slow, but turned out to be a good thriller. Made $74M (budget- 42M)- ****
The Accountant- Christian Wolf (Ben Affleck) is a low key CPA in a small town and a freelance ac- countant for criminal organizations. Wolf, unknowningly, is being tracked by the U.S. Treasury (J.K. Sim- mons) and a State Of The Art Robotic company when he find decrepancies in their books. Well-written. Enjoyed this thriller. Must-see! Made- $81M- (budget-$44M)- ****
The Birth Of A Nation- Based on a true story, Nat Turner (Nate Parker), a literate slave and preacher in Virginia, orchestrates an uprising against the slave masters after seeing and experiencing the cruelty during those horrible times in U.S. history. Parker, who directed, starred and wrote the screenplay, should win an Oscar for all 3 categories. Wow! Must-see for everyone! Made $15M (budget-N/A)- five stars (clas- sic)
Magnificent Seven- In the Wild West, seven gunmen (Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Lee Byung-hum, Vincent D'Onofrio, Maual Garcia-Rulfo and Martin Sensmeier) come together to help a revengful widow( Haley Bennett) and a poor town against a ruthless baron (Peter Sarsgard) who is looking for gold. Director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer, Shooter) kept the action going from begin- ning to end. Never seen a Western film with that many casualties. Must-see for action fans. Made - $92M /foreign- $67M (budget-$90M)- ****
