One Week Away:
Chadwick on what ‘Black Panther means: “This movie is about how you use power...The only differ- ence between a hero and a vil- lain is that the villain chooses to use that power in a way that is selfish and hurts other people.”
Unless you’ve been under a rock for the past several months—you’re well aware that THE must-see film of the year, Black Panther will be in theaters on next Friday, Feb- ruary 16th.
Marvel does it again and brings to life the first Black comic book superhero. The much-anticipated movie will not only thrill viewers at every turn, but will enhance their so- cial consciousness.
Why? Because its theme in- cludes the importance of a
wealthy
nation taking on responsibil- ity for the betterment of the whole world.
The gripping story centers around T’Challa aka Black Panther (Chadwick Bose- man) who, after the death of his father, T’Chaka, returns home to his secret, technolog- ically advanced African nation to take his rightful place on the throne as the king of Wakanda.
The dazzling Ryan Coog- ler directed film will reveal T’Challa faced with a new rival in the mysterious Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), whose family con- nection, desire for revenge, strong technical skills and knowledge of Wakanda has him coming in to try to be come king himself.
Not only that, T’Challa finds he must also protect his coun- try and the world from arms dealer, Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis), who is de- termined to get to Wakanda’s richest resource, Vibranium, an indestructible, vibration- absorbing metal. The metal is what powers Black Pan- ther’s suit and Captain America’s shield.
Wakanda is defended by a force of females called the Dora Milaje (Adored Ones). In the film, the fear- some, fabulous and fiercely loyal force battle to the death to protect the king.
The powerful cast includes Oscar winner, Lupita Ny- ong’o, as the crafty Nakia, whose duties are complicated
by her relationship with T’Challa; Danai Gurira as Okoye, the kickass head of the all-female Special Forces; the delightful, Letitia Wright, T’Challa’s techni- cal wiz baby sister, Shuri; and Angela Bassett as their Queen Mother, Ramonda. Martin Freeman (The Hob- bit) is a CIA agent on the trail of the same villain as Black Panther. Get Out Oscar nominee, Daniel Kaluuya plays W’Kabi, who runs se- curity on the borders of Wakanda, and Forest Whitaker, who lends spiri- tual guidance to it all as Zuri.
Director, Coogler (who also wrote the script with Joe Robert Cole) gave all his cast their own story arc and
weaved them all together in masterful fashion.
Disney spared no money when it came to the produc- tion of the film, according to reports it cost $200 million to produce, however ticket pre- sales have already exceeded $150 million, and broken Fan- dango records.
The ‘Black Panther’ movie is about as diverse a massive studio production that Holly- wood has ever seen. From its director, Ryan Coogler, to the predominantly all-Black cast,, the production crew was made of females both in front and behind the camera.
Add to that the jaw-drop- ping special effects, moviego- ers will have an unforgettable experience.
Chadwick Boseman is T’Challa aka Black Panther, the king of Wakanda. He is helped by his mother, Ramona played by St. Petersburg native, Angela Bassett; his sis- ter, Shuri played by Letitia Wright and girlfriend, Nakia, played by Lupita Nyong’o; Danai Guriri plays Okoye the head of the special all-female force, Dora Milaje; For- est Whitaker is the spiritual advisor, Zuri and Get Out star, Daniel Kaluuya runs security as W’Kabi. Michael B. Jordan is the villain, Erik Killmonger.

While it seems like everyone
is rooting for the film, there was a group that was hoping to thwart the success of the film. An Facebook group was deacti-
vated on the social media site for discussing plans to sabotage the film via poor Rotten Toma- toes reviews. However, it’s look- ing like nothing is going to take away the film’s buzz or shine.
