9-11: 16 Years Have Passed, But The Day Is Still Heartwrenching
Dr. Mae Jemison Is Celebrating 25th Anniversary As First Black Woman To Travel Into Space
On September 12, 1992, astronaut Mae Jemison be- came the first Black woman to travel into space when she served as the science mission specialist on the Endeav- our and returned to earth on September 20 of that year, after 127 orbits of the Earth.
In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of that his- toric space flight, Jemison is hosting a party—25 Strong— under the Endeavour space shuttle at the California Sci- ence Center in Los Angeles on September 15.
After her spaceflight, she
was often told by young girls and women what an inspira- tion she was to them, but Jemison emphasizes that it was was just as important for older white males, and people in gatekeeping positions, to witness her trip. “Back then I just wanted people to say, ‘Hey, the gatekeepers need to know that everybody has tal- ent.’”
Dr. Jemison graduated high school in Chicago, and, at age 16, entered Stanford University. She went on to study medicine at Cornell University, completing an in-
ternship at Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center. She enlisted in the Peace Corps as a medical officer, where she was stationed in Sierra Leone and Liberia.
Jemison returned to the United States in 1985, where she took classes in graduate engineering while also work- ing as a general practi- tioner. She was selected as an astronaut candidate in June,

Americans commemo- rated 9/11 on Monday with tear-streaked tributes, a pres- idential warning to terrorists and appeals from victims’ rel- atives for unity and hope 16 years after the deadliest ter- rorist attack on U.S. soil.
Nearly 3,000 people were killed when planes hijacked by terrorists hit the trade cen- ter, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville on Sept. 11, 2001, hurling America into a new consciousness of the threat of global terrorism.
Thousands of family mem- bers, survivors, rescuers and others gathered for the hours long reading of victims’ names at the World Trade Center, while President
Donald Trump spoke at the Pentagon and Vice Presi- dent Mike Pence addressed an observance at the Flight 93 National Memorial near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Elsewhere, thousands of Americans marked the an- niversary with service proj- ects.
Reflecting on a tragedy that still feels immediate to them, victims’ relatives thanked first responders and the military, worried for peo- ple affected by Hurricane Irma as it continued its de- structive path as a tropical storm and pleaded for a re- turn to the sense of cohesive- ness that followed the attacks.

Jenkins’ sister explained
to police that her sister left the house at 11:30 p.m. Fri- day night for the party. At 1:30 am on Saturday she re- ceived a text from her sister.
Internet ‘detectives’ are speculating that Jenkins was set up by her friends, al- though those allegations have not been proven and a cause of death has not been released yet. The speculation is centered on two videos that have been released on social media that some view- ers say make it look as though Jenkins was sexual assaulted.
