Musician Looks Forward To An Evening Of Jazzin’ For A Great Cause
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
On Sunday, April 22, 2018, members of the com- munity will gather for an Evening of Jazz. Entitled, “Jazz’n At The Italian Club,” the event will take place at the Italian Club, 1731 E. 7th Avenue, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.
Last year, Andre Walker’s MG & S (Mighty, Good & Strong) Band participated in the fundraiser for the first time. Walker said he felt that it was such a worth- while cause that he wanted to participate again this year.
“I remember attending there for kindergarten. But my family couldn’t afford to keep me there and I at- tended public schools. I want everyone in the com- munity to come out and support the school so that those kids can benefit,” Walker said.
A Tampa native and ed- ucator, Walker’s name has always been linked to music. And his band has been ac- tive in the community for a long time. The band partici- pating in the fundraiser is a perfect fit.
Marvin Knight, coor- dinator of the event said the goal this year is to raise $20,000. The proceeds from the evening will bene- fit the school. The funds will be used to help with sum- mer programs for the stu- dents.
In addition to MG & S Band, PARIS All-Star Combo, Alex Harris, HOTT MESS, and others are looking forward to showcasing their talents during the evening.
Scott Hardy, a mem- ber of the Positive Images Committee said, “We have several people who have agreed to lend their talents.
“We just want everyone to come out, enjoy a great evening, mix and mingle with friends, and just relax while helping the children at St. Peter Claver.”
Knight said there is still room for anyone wishing to come out and enjoy and evening of relaxation. He further said there are also

such a good time they will be looking forward to it next year. We don’t want you to listen to other people talk about it once it’s over, we want you to talk about how much you enjoyed it,” Knight said.
St. Peter Claver
Catholic School
In 1893, the St. Peter Catholic Church purchased of an old existing church. On February 2, 1894, two Sisters of the Holy Names began classes with 16 stu- dents at the school that was to bear the name of the church.
After arsonists burned the building on Morgan
Street, the church pur- chased a piece of property on the corner of Scott and Governor in the Black com- munity. The school re- opened in October 1894.
It has served as a source of educating minority stu- dents since its inception. Many African Americans who attended the school have gone to become active members of the community.
The school is celebrating its 125th Anniversary this year.
