City Of Tampa To Celebrate Archives Awareness Week
The City of Tampa will celebrate Archives Awareness Week with exhibits and pro- grams taking place at local archives throughout the week of July 15 - 21, 2018. These programs are free and open to the public.
Archives Awareness Week was established in 1992 by the City of Tampa Archives Advisory Committee. During this week, local archivists and history enthusiasts come to- gether to present their collec- tions through exhibits and programs that convey the value of archives in the iden- tification, preservation and conservation of historic records.
Archives Awareness Week is held during the second week of July to coincide with the City of Tampa’s July 15th
birthday.

Key Exhibits and Programs
• Exhibits will be held all week long at the Tampa Bay History Center, Tampa Mu- seum of Art, John F. Ger- many Public Library, Henry B. Plant Museum, Ybor City Museum State Park, Robert W. Saunders, Sr. Library, and Old City Hall.
• On Sunday, July 15, 2018, at 2 p. m., Sacred Heart Church docents will share the remarkable history of the church, which has stood in downtown Tampa since 1859.
• On Monday, July 16, 2018, at 3 p. m., the City of Tampa will feature Fred Hearns discussing The Birth of a Race, which was filmed in Tampa in 1918. The his- toric Tampa Photo Supply Collection will be shared by E. J. Salcines. Guests will receive a new publication, Tampa in 1918.
• On Tuesday, July 17, 2018, at 3:30 p. m., the Henry B. Plant Museum will have a program, Red Cross Nursing and the War of 1898: the Tampa Connection, featuring Dr. Charles McGraw Groh, who will discuss the path that led dozens of young women from New York to Cuba in 1898.
• On Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at 1 p. m., the Tampa Bay History Center will have
a tour, led by Rodney Kite- Powell, of its newly opened Touchton Map Library, which is the only cartographic cen- ter in the Southeastern United States.
• On Thursday, July 19, 2018 at 2 p. m., librarians at the University of South Florida Libraries Special Col- lections will feature Animals in the Archives, a program highlighting unique and valu- able materials.
• On Thursday, July 19, 2018 at 4:30 p. m., Tampa Historical Society will provide a lecture by Catherine Thompson on symbolism in American mourning tradi- tions in the nineteenth cen- tury.
• On Friday, July 20, 2018 at 1 p. m., the Tampa Bay His- tory Center will lead a guided
tour of its flag exhibit, which features more than 20 origi- nal flags.
• On Saturday, July 21, 2018 at 10:15 a. m., the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library will offer a program on the history of Seminole Heights followed by an 11:30 a. m. program on using land records for geneal- ogy.
• On Saturday, July 21, 2018,from2p.m.–4p.m., the Tampa Bay History Cen- ter will feature a local history authors and writers forum, which will include a book signing with local authors Del Acosta, John Cinchett, Rex Gordon, Linda Hope, Rodney Kite-Powell, Helen Richards, Arthur Savage, and Michael Wigh.
