Teenager Charged As Adult In Fatal Shooting
Employee Jailed
Attorney Andrew Warren, State Attorney for the 13th Judicial Circuit plans to charge a 16-year-old teenager as an adult. He was arrested last month in the shooting death of a 14-year- old girl killed by gunfire while riding in a car.
Detectives with the Hills- borough County Sheriff’s Of- fice arrested Dereck Polanco Rivera and charged him with second-de- gree murder and throwing a deadly missile at, within, or into a vehicle.
Rivera, of Brandon, is accused of firing several shots into a vehicle during the early morning hours of June 20th. One of the bullets struck Di- norah Rodriguez in the back of the head. She was rid- ing in the back of a vehicle. An adult was driving and tw0 other teenagers were in the car.
An unidentified adult and two other teenagers were in- side the car when it reached the intersection of Kingsway Road and East Clay Avenue. At that point, someone opened fire and shot at the vehicle several times.

The adult female driver went to the Walgreens, 128 E. Brandon Blvd., and called 9- 1-1, after discovering that Rodriguez had been hit by the gunfire.
Rodriguez was trans- ported to Brandon Hospital, and later airlifted to Tampa General Hospital, where she was listed in “very critical condition.”
She died the following day as a result of her injuries. During the investigation, de- tectives learned that the oc- cupants in the car had attended a house party in Valrico.
Police said a male occu- pant in the car had a “long

standing beef” with Dereck Rivera. Rivera is alleged to have targeted the vehicle after it left the party and fired several shots at it. Detectives don’t believe Rodriguez was the intended target.
According to police, Rivera is a certified member with the “TC Boys,” a gang operating in the Town N’ Country area. The shooting is not believed to be gang-re- lated.
The State Attorney’s Of- fice had the responsibility to determine if Rivera would be charged as a juvenile or as an adult.
Rivera is currently being held on a $132,000 bond.
A 52-year-old Pinellas County man was arrested after he committed battery on two fellow employees and as- saulted four others with a ve- hicle. He is facing several charges.
According to police, around 9 a.m., Wednesday, deputies responded to Indian Rocks Beach City Hall, 1507 Bay Palm Blvd. When they ar- rived, they were told that an employee, identified as Errol Sylvester Gray had at- tacked fellow employees and fled the scene in a city-owned flatbed truck.
Deputies located the vehi- cle traveling southbound on Gulf Blvd., and 10th Avenue, North. They initiated a felony traffic stop and made contact with Gray. Gray was report- edly uncooperative and resis- ted. He was taken into custody without further inci- dent.
During the investigation, officials said Gray worked in the Public Service Depart- ment for the City of Indian Rocks Beach. During a meet- ing with his supervisor, Gray

He is alleged to have be-
come angry and committed battery on a 58-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman who allegedly witnessed the attack.
Witnesses told police Gray got into the vehicle and started driving westbound on N. 15th Avenue. He reportedly made a u-turn and returned to the entrance of the City Hall building. At that point, he allegedly drove towards four women who were stand- ing in front of the building.
He then fled the scene and was later located and taken into custody.

By Alligators
Teenager Killed
Earlier this week, police in St. Petersburg identified the body pulled from a Lake Mag- giore as a teenager. The body was discovered last Thursday.
According to police, the body of 16-year-old Jarvis Deliford was discovered in the mangroves at the south east corner of Lake Maggiore. Police said there were signs of alligator involvement at the scene due to the condition of the body.
Deliford had not been seen since June 29th.
Police initially said that it didn’t appear to be foul play involved. However, an official autopsy report is still pend- ing.
Experts have stated that it

is unlikely that the teenager was killed by alligators be- cause they hunt alone. At the time the body was discovered about 10 alligators were sur- rounding it.
The experts said the alliga- tors were most likely scaveng- ing rather than hunting. The investigation is continuing.
