Funeral
MRS. BETTY JO HOPKINS
Mrs. Betty Jo Byron Hop- kins went home to be with the Lord on Friday morning, March 20, 2020. Her homego- ing service will be private.
Betty Jo was born Novem- ber 16, 1932 in Tampa FL, to Mr. and Mrs. Willie and Myr- tice Byron. Betty Jo received Christ at a young age and joined St. John M. B. Church under the late Rev. Dillard. She later joined Beulah Baptist In- stitutional Church under the late Rev. Leon Lowry. She served as a faithful member of Beulah and later joined the Mother’s Board and served as Treasurer.
She graduated from Mid- dleton High School in 1949, and from Walker College in Jack- sonville, FL, as an Executive Secretary. She received recog- nition for a Meritorious Paper submitted in the National Shorthand Contest sponsored by The Esterbrook Pen Com- pany.
Betty Jo worked for Jack- son, Attorney at Law and later spent decades working as a Sec- retary for Local 1402 for the
Tampa Maritime Association International Longshoremen’s Association office, where she retired in June 2010.
Betty Jo is preceded in death by: her husband, Ray- mond Hopkins; her parents, and siblings: brothers, Ben and Bobby Byron and sister, Myr- line Shepard.
She leaves to cherish her memories: daughter, Vickye Byron; son, A. Douglas Shiggs (Brenda); granddaughter, Denise Watson (Calvin); great grandchildren, Aric, Brian, and Elise Watson; nephew, Rem- ington Shepard (Linda), Melvin W. Shepard, Torrance Shep- ard, Aaron Fludd, Kavaun Har- rison (Corlissa); nieces, Cierra Shepard, Kya Grace Walton, Tiera Shepard, Wenona Fludd, Velessie Washington, Barbara Byron Jones, Atlanta, GA; Car- men Byron, Newark, NJ; sister- in-law, Romelia Byron; very close cousins: Delores Williams and her family, Ricky Bell, Tony Shepard, Adrian Blanchett, and Lonnie Jackson and his family, Rhonda Jack- son, Twanda Jackson, Rev. Jay Jackson; and many more fam- ily members and friends, in- cluding, caregivers: Elizabeth Belton, Lucille Williams, Gail Napper, Angela Williams Sims, and Tenita Moore.
There will be a viewing on Wednesday, March 25, 2020 at Wilson Funeral Home, 3000 N. 29th Street, Tampa, Florida from 3 – 7 p.m.
In lieu of the current re- strictions from the CDC, we are asking that you use the visita- tion as an opportunity to pay your final respect. The funeral service will be private. For your convenience and safety, we have extended our visitation hours.

43rd Street Shooting Leaves 1 Man Dead, 1 Injured

Two unidentified men were injured by gunfire during a shooting Saturday night. The shooting took place in the 6200 block of N. 43rd Street, around 10:30 p.m.
According to the Hillsbor- ough County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the loca- tion in reference to the shots being fired.

   tim was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital, main, where he was pronounced dead. The second victim had left the hos- pital before investigators ar- rived.
However, he was located and escorted back to the hospi- tal for treatment. The victims have not been identified and the investigation is continuing.

     Last Wednesday around 1:51 a.m., deputies with the Hillsbor- ough County Sheriff’s Office re- sponded to a call of shots in the 13700 block of N. 19th Street. When deputies arrived, they lo- cated evidence of a shooting that occurred within an open apart- ment building breezeway.
No victim was found on the scene. However, deputies were later notified of a gunshot victim at a local hospital. The deputies responded to the hospital, where a victim was found with a non-life threatening gunshot wound. He was determined to be in stable condition.
Police did not release any
additional information about the victim. No motive for the shooting has been discovered and no arrests have been made in the case. The investigation is continuing.
