Pinellas County Sheriff’s Detectives have arrested a 17- year-old mother of twins and accused her of intentionally hurting one of the infants. She is charged with aggravated child abuse.
According to police, the teenager was left watching the infants when her mother went to work shortly before 6:30 a.m., Wednesday. When her mother came home, she noticed that one of the twins was lethar- gic, and not acting normally.
She transported the child to the hospital. Police were con- tacted after it was determined that the child did not have acci- dental injuries.
The child’s mother, Qa- dayshia Ward, was the only person with the children at the time the injury occurred. When contacted by police, she pro- vided several versions of what happened to the baby, which did not appear consistent with the injuries.
Detectives were later in- formed by medical staff that the infant’s injuries could have only come from in- tentional abuse, and were not accidental.
QADAYSHIA WARD
The injuries consisted of a fractured skull, a brain hemor- rhage, and possible brain dam- age.
Detectives say the injured infant remains in the hospital for treatment and the twin infant also remains in the hospital until he is released into foster care.
Ms. Ward allegedly admit- ted to intentionally throwing the baby on the floor out of frus- tration during an interview with police. She was arrested last Friday and charged with one count of aggravated child abuse with great bodily harm/ perma- nent disfigurement. Detectives are continuing their investiga- tion.
