It was early in the second quarter, and things weren’t looking great for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Aaron Rodgers and the undefeated Green Bay Pack- ers had scored on each of their first two possessions, while Tampa Bay’s first two drives had ended with punts.
Up 10-0 and primed for a third straight scoring drive, Rodgers looked left for his
Bill Belichick Indicates Virus Restrictions Hurt Patriots
CAM NEWTON
The New England Patriots played their worst game of the season on Sunday, and it hardly seems like a coincidence that it came after they lost practice time due to positive coronavirus tests. While he has never been one to make ex- cuses, Bill Belichick clearly feels the situation negatively impacted his team.
After New England’s 18-12 loss to the Denver Broncos, Belichick indicated that miss- ing practice time was an issue for the Patriots.
Those responses were long- winded by Belichick’s stan- dards, but he had a more typical answer when asked di- rectly about not having as much time as usual to practice.
The uncertain schedule for the Patriots began two weeks ago when Cam Newton tested positive for COVID-19. They have since had to open and close their facility after a few more positive tests. New- ton missed a significant amount of practice time while he was waiting for clearance, and it showed on Sunday. He completed 17-of-25 passes for 157 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. The former NFL MVP had a chance to lead the Patriots to a comeback win late in the game, but he looked uncomfortable dropping back all day.
JAMEL DEAN
favorite target, Davante Adams. Instead, he found Jamel Dean.
A second-year corner and third-round pick out of Auburn, Dean broke on the ball and snatched it out of the air, racing 32 yards for Tampa Bay’s first points of the game and starting a run of unanswered points that wouldn’t end until the Bucs left Raymond James Stadium with a 38-10 blowout victory.
That wasn’t just any pick-
six. For starters, this is Aaron Rodgers we’re talk- ing about. Coming into Sun- day’s game, he had only thrown two pick-sixes in his entire career. That’s 16 sea- sons, 185 games, and over 6,000 pass attempts.
It was the first intercep- tion thrown by Rodgers all season, and it completely turned the tide for Tampa Bay. Just three plays later, the Bucs would pick off Rodgers again, this time on a deflec- tion by Carlton Davis that landed in the hands of Mike Edwards. That one came just a few yards shy of ending up in the opposite end zone, too.
After the game, it was clear how big of an impact Dean’s interception made on the team’s mentality.
