Federal Judge Extends Deadline To Register To Vote!
Community-Law Enforcement Workshop Rescheduled
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Shortly before noon on Wednesday, U. S. District Judge Mark E. Walker ex- tended the deadline for indi- viduals to register to vote in Florida. The new deadline is Tuesday, October 18th. The General Election and a Special City Election will take place on Novem- ber 8th.
The extension came about after the Florida Democratic Party filed a lawsuit seeking an additional week for those affected by Hurricane Matthew. Hurricane Matthew paralleled the Florida coast last week, caus- ing thousands of residents to evacuate.
Governor Rick Scott op- posed the extension, stating that people had time to regis- ter.
Jackie Schutz, Commu- nications Director for Gover- nor Scott said, “According to the judge, Florida law does not allow for the State to ex- tend the voter registration deadline... Therefore, accord- ing to the judge, extending
the voter registration dead- line is not a decision specifi- cally granted to the Governor of Florida, including in a de- clared state of emergency like Hurricane Matthew.
“Additionally, the judge stated that the Governor is not a proper party to the law- suit. The State will follow the court’s decision and discuss with the Legislature possible amendments to current law during the upcoming legisla- tive session.”
In keeping with the new deadline, prospective voters can obtain the voter’s regis- tration application, complete it, sign it, and return it before the close of business on Tues- day, October 18th. The appli- cation can also be dropped off at any Supervisor of Elections Office, any Hillsborough County Tax Collector’s Office, or any of the Hillsborough County Public Libraries, in- cluding on the weekend. If mailed, the application must be postmarked October 18th.
