USF President Slated To Retire
In coming months, the University of South Florida will begin searching for a new president. President Judy Genshaft announced her plans to retire on July 1, 2019.
Dr. Genshaft said, “The University of South Florida is on a trajectory unlike ever be- fore in its history. We are reaching milestones once re- served for universities twice our age. We continue to make groundbreaking strides in re- search, student success, teach- ing and community impact.
“Because of this positive momentum, my family and I believe that this is the right time for me to step down from my post as president, effective July 1, 2019. It has been the honor of my professional ca- reer to be part of this journey since the year 2000.”
Since becoming president in 2000, Dr. Genshaft has catapulted the USF System to national and international prominence in every key insti- tutional area, including stu- dent success, research and innovation, fundraising and

economic development. In June 2018, under Dr. Gen- shaft’s leadership, USF earned the designation of Pre- eminence, placing USF in the most elite category of state universities in Florida.
During her presidency, the university’s enrollment has grown by 40 percent while its four-year graduation rate has tripled. Most notably, all USF students now graduate at the same rate, regardless of race, ethnicity or family income level. This extremely rare achievement in higher educa-
tion has earned USF wide- spread national recognition.
In 2017, USF became just the third public university in the country founded since 1956 to complete a $1 billion fundraising campaign. During Dr. Genshaft’s tenure, the university’s endowment has grown from $254 million to $480 million.
In perhaps her most signif- icant contribution, her focus on transforming USF from a regional institution into a highly-regarded international research university has had a far-reaching impact.
During her presidency, USF’s research activity has tripled to more than $568 mil- lion in annual expenditures, positioning USF as one of the nation’s top 30 public univer- sities for research. USF also now ranks as America’s fifth leading public university in generating new United States utility patents.

Hurricane Season
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
The hurricane season be- gins on June 1st and culmi- nates on November 30th. However, the season peaks from late August until the end of September.
Currently, there are four active storms meteorologists are keeping a watchful eye on. If Hurricane Florence remains on the path she is traveling, she is expected to make landfall on the East Coast of the United States around 2 a.m., Thursday.
South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia will be impacted by the hurricane that is projected to intensify
to a Category 4, and drop back down to a Category 3 before it makes land. Addi- tionally, the storm is slow moving and could drop as much as 12 inches on the area.
In addition to Hurri- cane Florence, meteorolo- gists are also watching Helene and Issac, both reaching hurricane status while still hundreds of miles away in the Atlantic Ocean. Hurricane Isaac is ex- pected to weaken as it contin- ues to move westward, and Hurricane Helene is not projected ti impact any land.
Officials say the best way to prepare for a storm is be- fore it comes.
