Crime
Deputies Rescue Woman Held Captive By Family
Early Saturday morning, deputies with the Hillsbor- ough County Sheriff’s Office rescued a woman and her child. They were being held by family members.
According to the Hills- borough County Sheriff’s Of- fice, at approximately 6:30 a.m., deputies responded to 9601 Greenbank Drive, in Riverview, to conduct a well- ness check on a 33-year-old woman and her child.
The caller told police that Ms. Silky Gaind had con- tacted her parents in India, and advised she was being beaten and held by her hus- band and his parents. The caller also told police that Ms. Gaind may be scared to talk to police because of cul- tural traditions.
When deputies arrived, they determined there were people inside the home, but they all refused to come to the door or acknowledge the deputy’s presence. While a supervisor was en route, a deputy continued to knock.
Ms. Gaind suddenly at- tempted to open the door and screamed for the deputy to save her and her child.
The deputy forced the door open and was immedi- ately confronted by the vic- tim’s husband, Devbir Kalsi, 33, who attempted to push the door closed. The deputy forced his way in and was arresting the husband when he was confronted by the husband’s father, Jasbir

Kalsi, 67, and mother, Ms. Bhupinder Kalsi.
Additional deputies ar- rived on scene and entered the home where they found Ms. Gaind badly beaten and bruised over her entire body. Her one-year-old daughter was located and ap- peared unharmed. The sub- stantive evidence of the physical abuse to Ms. Gaind indicated the beat- ings had been ongoing for an extended period of time.
The investigation re- vealed that Devbir Kalsi contacted his parents regard- ing his wife being disobedi- ent and they came from India to help counsel and discipline her.
In addition to the contin- ued beatings Ms. Gaind had already suffered from her husband, his parents participated in holding her and her child against their will, including holding a knife to her throat, taking her phone so she could not call 9-1-1.
All parties were deter- mined to be foreign nationals of India.
The husband and his par- ents were arrested and booked into the Hillsbor- ough County Jail. The Florida Abuse Hotline and ICE were notified.
Ms. Gaind and the child have been provided a safe place of refuge.
Devbir Kalsi was charged with false imprison- ment, felony battery, child abuse, and denying access to 9-1-1.
His father was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, (knife), false imprisonment, child abuse, and denying access to 9-1-1.
Mrs. Kalsi, 61, was charged with Battery domes- tic violence, and failure to re- port child abuse.
