The Observer View On The Mueller Report: Trump Is A Disgrace; Not Welcome In Britain
Dragged For Saying There’s
‘Nothing Wrong With Taking
The prospect of Donald Trump making a state visit to Britain in June is stomach- churning. The corruption in- vestigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller, whose damning report was published last week, pro- vided ample evidence of what we already know: Trump is unfit to hold the office of president of the United States. By his words and ac- tions over two wretched, de- structive years in power, he has proved beyond doubt he is no friend of Britain.
The proposal that the British state should extend to this unworthy man its high- est honours, including an ad- dress to parliament, and a banquet and carriage ride down the Mall with the Queen, is misjudged. It will do nothing to revive the “spe- cial relationship,” already torn apart by Trump’s reac- tionary policies on climate change, migration, race, mul- tilateralism, Yemen, nuclear arms, civil liberties and other issues. What it will do is give an undeserved boost to a wounded charlatan.

William Barr’s belated re- lease of the report the day be- fore Easter, like his earlier, misleading contents “sum- mary,” was a dishonourable attempt at damage limita- tion. Yet this scandal looks certain to escalate, not fade. Barr’s many redactions, particularly concerning the Trump campaign’s involve- ment with Russian election meddling and the WikiLeaks connection, will not be al- lowed to stand. Mueller refers to 14 ongoing, related criminal investigations. Sep- arate federal probes continue in New York.
The onus now falls on Con- gress to take the vast amount of information gathered by Mueller and move the process to a conclusion. Leading Democrats have sig- nalled their intention to do so. Additional testimony will be sought from both Mueller and Barr. Some, like the presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren, are pushing for impeachment. Others, like the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, want to further weaken Trump by besieging him with endless, enervating in- quiries.
 Information From Russians’
Rudy Giuliani, the presi- dent’s personal lawyer and coiner of the phrase “Truth isn’t truth,” made the Sunday morning news show rounds to discuss the recently par- tially released Mueller re- port and its many alarming revelations. While some, in- cluding certain top Democ- rats, believe the findings of DOJ Special Counsel Robert Mueller warrant talk of im- peachment, Giuliani does not. To him, it’s fine, for ex- ample, for Donald Trump to have reaped the benefits of Russian interference.
“There’s nothing wrong with taking information from Russians,” Giuliani as- serted, brazenly, to a bewil- dered Jake Tapper on CNN’s State of the Union.
Giuliani was specifically speaking about comments from former presidential can- didate Mitt Romney, who said he was “sickened” by the current administration’s “dis- honesty” as laid out in the still redacted Mueller re- port.
“Stop the bull. Stop the pious act,” Giuliani said be- fore implying Romney has taken political dirt as well. “What a hypocrite. Any can- didate in the world — in America — would take infor- mation.” He then added, “Who says it’s even illegal?”

habit of blurting out poten- tially incriminating things about his boss on nationally broadcast television shows or simply betraying he has no idea how Twitter works — was also asked about Don- ald Trump’s tweets over the last few weeks, which went from saying the report was a “total exoneration” to, after it was partially released, calling it “total bulls*it.” Tapper asked Giuliani about this paradox.
“Some things are false, a lot of things are question- able,” Giuliani said, with a laugh.
Giuliani’s latest spluttering appearance — both on CNN and on Meet the Press with Chuck Todd — inspired yet another pile-on on the former “America’s mayor.”

not be allowed to stand.
If Americans are content to allow a habitual liar who has presided over systemic il- legality, numerous ill-con- cealed attempts to obstruct justice and a foul-mouthed culture of venality and vendettas to continue to lead their country, that is a matter for them. But the British peo- ple cannot be expected to col- lude or condone such misbehaviour. And what’s to be gained? A fantasy post- Brexit trade deal? Trump’s word, evidently, cannot be
trusted.

Veteran Journalist April Ryan Says White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders Has To Go
In perhaps a demonstration of the power of the press, a call by veteran Washington journalist April Ryan for the firing of White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has spawned two trending hashtags on Twitter and multiple news stories.
Ryan, a CNN political an- alyst, told CNN anchor Erin Burnett Thursday night that Sanders should be canned because the recently released report by Special Counsel Robert Mueller on the ad- ministration’s potential in- volvement with Russia shows Sanders lied about the spring 2017 firing of former FBI director James Comey.
“Not only does she not have any credibility left, she lied,” Ryan, who also serves as White House correspon- dent for American Urban Radio Networks, told Bur- nett. “She outright lied and the people, the American peo- ple, can’t trust her. They can’t trust what’s said from the

president’s mouthpiece, spokesperson, from the peo- ple’s house.
“Therefore, she should be let go; she should be fired; end of story,” Ryan continued. “When there is a lack of cred- ibility there, you have to start ... lopping the heads off. It’s ‘Fire me Thursday’ or ‘Fire me, Good Friday.’ She needs to go.”
Ryan was referring to the fact that Sanders told the press in May of 2017, just after the firing of Comey, that “countless” FBI agents had lost confidence in
Comey, but the recently re- leased report by Mueller in- dicated that Sanders told government investigators that her claim was “a slip of the tongue” and “not founded on anything.”
Sanders responded to the discrepancy Thursday in conversation with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, saying she was wrong to use the word “countless” but that it was “not untrue” that a number of current and former agents re- ferred to Comey as a “dis- graced leaker,” The Hill reported.
