Runoffs Needed In Four City Municipal Races

On Tuesday, March 5th, voters went to the polls to elect a Mayor and seven City Council representatives. The voters were also asked to vote on 18 Amendments.
All of the amendments were passed and four City Council representatives. In order to be declared a win- ner in the election, the can- didate must win 50% plus 1, or the majority of the vote. As a result of the rule, a runoff will be required in the race for the Mayor’s Office and City Council Districts 1, 3, and 5.
Incumbents Charlie Mi- randa, District 2; Guido Maniscalco, District 6, and Luis Viera, District 7 all re- tained their respective seats.
New member Bill Carl- son was elected Tuesday to fill the District 4 seat previ- ously held by Harry Cohen, who was defeated in the race for Mayor.
Mayor’s Race
There were seven May- oral Candidates in the race. The two top vote getters were Jane Castor, (who captured 47.99% of the race with 23,318 votes), and David Straz (who captured 15.47% of the race with 7,518 votes).
City Council Race
Runoffs will take place in
John Dingfelder won 48.98% or, 21,042 votes. However, Stephen Lytle won 20.23% or 8,692 votes and Nicholas Glover won 19.74% or 8,482 votes. The difference of 210 votes may trigger a recount in that race.
District 5
In District 5, five con- tenders were vying for the seat. Jeffrey Rhodes cap- tured 30.23% or 2,556 votes, while Orlando Gudes, his nearest competitor captured 27.67% or 2,339 votes.
Anyone who has not reg- istered can participate in the runoff election if registered by Monday, March 25, 2019.
Early Voting for the runoff election will begin on Sunday, April 14th and end on Saturday, April 20th. The runoff election will take place on Tuesday, April 23, 2019.

three of the City Council Seats for District 1, District 3, and District 5. On Thurs- day afternoon, the Hillsbor- ough County Supervisor of Elections Office will deter- mine if a recount is required in the District 1 and District 3 races.
Ms. Gerri Kramer,
spokesperson for the office said, “If there is a recount, it is triggered by the election laws because of the closeness in the number of votes re- ceived by the second place winners in District 1 and Dis- trict 3.
“If a recount is required, it will be completed by ma- chine and will begin at 8 a.m., Friday.”
District 1
In the District 1 race, Joseph Citro captured 31.30% or, 13,025 votes. However, Walter Smith, II won 19.30% or 8,031 votes and Craig Newman won 18.84% or 7,841 votes. The difference of 190 votes may trigger a recount.
