Community Responds To Tom Brady Retiring After 22 Years Of Pro Football
TOM BRADY
BY MONIQUE STAMPS Sentinel Staff Writer
Ending the speculation that has swirled since the Buccaneers’ loss to the LA Rams on January 23, 2022, Tom Brady has announced his retirement from profes- sional football on February 1, 2022.
Brady, 44, widely consid- ered the greatest quarterback in NFL history, has won seven Superbowl rings, the most championships won by a single player, and five Super Bowl MVP awards.
In an Instagram post, Brady made the reasons for his exit clear. "My playing ca-
reer has been such a thrilling ride, and far beyond my imagination, and full of ups and downs," Brady said in his statement. "When you are in it every day, you really don't think about any kind of ending. As I sit here now, however, I think of all the great players and coaches I was privileged to play with and against -- the competi- tion was fierce and deep, JUST HOW WE LIKE IT. But the friendships and rela- tionships are just as fierce and deep. I will remember and cherish these memories and re-visit them often. I feel like the luckiest person in the world."
Hermione Andrews says, “Tom Brady did what he was supposed to do. He won a championship for Tampa and this year, he ended the season with a comeback. Unfortunately, it was not enough this time. However, he is the GOAT, and it is a good time for him to retire.”
Barry Clark states, “As a season ticket holder, it’s a sad day in Tampa. He gave us two great years and gave us a Superbowl win. I thank him for what he did here. We will miss him.”
C. Blythe Andrews, IV, said, “Congratulations to him. He is the greatest to play the game and I wish him the best in the future. Thank you, Tom Brady, for bringing a championship to Tampa!”
Richard Clebert stated, “It’s the end of an era. As an athlete, you will always miss football. But there is a tremendous toll that football takes on your body. He played professionally for 22 years, but he has been play- ing since he was a child. It is hard being away from your family so much. It will be great for him to spend time with his family.”
Things You Probably Didn’t Know Were Created By Black Inventors
This Black History Month, we’ve highlighted over in- ventions that the world would not have if it weren’t for Black inventors.
Folding Cabinet Bed
In 1885, Sarah Goode became the first Black woman to receive a US patent. She moved to Chicago and opened a furniture store. It was there she came up with an indus- try changing idea that brought more urban residents with limited space into her store.
Potato Chips
George Crum was working as a chef at a resort in New York. A customer sent his dish of french fries back to the kitchen, claiming that they weren’t good. In an irritated fit, Crum cut the potatoes as thinly as possible, fried them until they were burnt crisps, and threw a generous hand- ful of salt on top. Thus, the chip was born.
