Why Hospitals Need Computers
hink for a second how
important it is for hos- pitals to keep track of pa- tients’ information which may include lab results, per- sonal medical data, test re- sults and prescription history.
Physicians and nurses must be able to make elec- tronic notes and observations of each patient to avoid er- rors and dangerous conflicts. A computer is needed in al- most every scene of a hospital including patients’ rooms, operating room and the lab area.
Computers have a large memory accountability more than the average human. There are specific computers called medical computers set aside for important jobs such as running cat scans, ultra- sounds, MRIs and solely for blood tests. Stand alone com- puters are also enlisted in the hospital environment to dis- play results to patients so that they will have a greater understanding of specific medical procedures.
The computers may show videos or still images to pa- tients before an operation. Standalone computers may also be present to monitor the progress of a patient who
recently underwent a major surgery or procedure.
Hospitals employ a legion of tablets to communicate with restricted servers, and retrieve vital information to treat patients. Physicians will often communicate with pa- tients and other hospitals to obtain a diagnosis without being physically present at distant venues.
Computer databases keep track of medical inventory and supplies and will even send crucial alerts to nurses, doctors and essential staff too, when inventory is low on certain medications. Special computer programs keep track of all types of inventory, but especially life and death medication for patients. Medication can be successive to theft and abuse without some form of control by health care personnel.
