Inducted Into College’s Basketball Hall Of Fame
BY JULIA JACKSON Eugene Clem was in-
ducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame at Dillard Uni- versity. The event took place on February 15, 2019.
Clem grew up in Ha- vana, Florida, and attended Northside High School, where he played basketball for 4 years. In his senior year, he was voted “Most Valuable Player.”
Receiving a full academic scholarship, Clem went on to Dillard University in New Orleans. In his freshman year, he was named “Fresh- man of the Year,” in the Gulf- coast Athletic Conference.
The accolades continued. In his junior year in a game against Tennessee State, he scored 24 of the 26 long

range shots that were made. After the game, a profes- sional scout for the ABA in- quired if he wanted to leave college and pursue a profes- sional career. The decision was to remain in school and obtain a degree.
Clem graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts de- gree in Sociology and His- tory. He participated in a tryout with the Cincinnati Royals.
He began seeking em- ployment to work in the area of troubled juveniles and family dynamics. In 1971, he began employment with the State of Florida Juvenile Di- vision at the Hillsborough Halfway House as a Youth Counselor.
With basketball still in his system, he began playing AAU basketball throughout the state. In 1972, he won the AAU Tournament in Ken- tucky and was voted “Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament.” He was of- fered another opportunity to tryout with a professional team – this time by an NBA scout.
Clem considered the op- portunity, but decided to stay where he was, doing what he always wanted to do – work- ing with youth, “so I could af- fect the lives of young people.”
Clem became an Assis- tant Superintendent at the Halfway House, working in a program for boys with crim- inal and mental health is- sues.
He was promoted to Su- perintendent in 1974, and in 1978, became a Program An- alyst, serving 5 counties.
Clem returned to his true passion -- working directly with youth – in 1984 and re- mained there until 2004.
Clem realized he missed working with youth and be- came a permanent substitute teacher, teaching law studies at Franklin Middle Magnet School. The students there honored him as the “Most Popular Teacher of the Year.”
He also worked at Bur- nett Middle School, where he taught History and Social Studies, until April 2010, when he retired.
