Student Takes Part In Live Space Station Explorers Program
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Last month, the NASA STEM Engagement Program hosted an event involving students from throughout the world. The students had an opportunity to ask a question via a link with in-flight astronauts aboard the space station.
One of those students was Tampa resident, Chandra Miller. Chandra is a middle school student. Her question was, “What is a Lab-On-a-Chip, or Tissue Chip, and how does it work on the ISS?”
Her question was answered by Com- mander Chris Cassidy, of NASA. His re- sponse was, “A small chip about the size of your fingernail or as large as a credit card. On those chips are three dimensional human cells. This is a much more effective way of studying than the 2 dimensional cells that we can grow on earth.”
Commander Cassidy was aboard the In- ternational Space Station, Expedition 63. He discussed life and work aboard the orbital lab- oratory as he answered the pre-recorded ques- tions on August 7th. The students are affiliated with the Center for the Advancement of Sci- ence, in Melbourne, Florida.
Chandra is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
CHANDRA MILLER
Choice (Lois) Miller, Jr., and granddaugh- ter of Mrs. Tommy Lee Miller.
The 13-year-old is a student at Stewart Middle School and said she is still figuring out her plans for the future. But some fields that have caught her attention include becoming an attorney, engineer, Olympic star in soccer or track and field star.
She also is very interested in Space and Technology and wants to learn to fly.
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Thursday For Renaissance At West River
The Renaissance at West River is the first new construction at the former North Boulevard Homes site and is considered the
gateway to the new West Tampa community.
The Tampa Housing Au- thority of the City of Tampa will have its grand opening/ribbon cutting cere- mony for the Renaissance at West River. The ceremony will be held Thursday morn- ing, Sept. 24, 2020, 9 a. m., at the corner of W. Main Street and Rome Avenue. City of Tampa Mayor Jane Castor is expected to speak during the 1-hour ceremony.
The former North Boule- vard Homes community was
demolished in 2018. This new construction is the first effort to create a Center-City, de- signed to support a diverse, multi-generational mixed- use, mixed income commu- nity that will integrate into the West Tampa area.
The Renaissance at West River is a 6-story, 160 unit elderly complex with several amenities.
The Renaissance at West River is the first building to come back to the community after the demolition.
