The Sentinel Editorial Board’s Recommendations For November 2020 Election
Your VOTE is your voice on issues affecting housing, education, employ- ment and healthcare.
If you want to make a difference in your household and your community you must vote.
We are still quarantined with no end in sight, but as you are witness- ing, life and events are still taking place. So the goal has to be to make sure the trickery and possible theft of another election are not an option for VICTORY in 2020. The propaganda about mail-in ballots and the uncer- tainty that our votes may not be counted cannot prevail. WE must all forge ahead understanding that every VOTE, is important. 1960s Freedom fighter, Diane Nash said, ’Freedom is people realizing they are their own leader.’
Does your BLACK LIFE MATTER? If so, then drown out other folks’ noise and do what you must do.
Malcolm X once said, early in my life, I learned that if you want something, you had better make some noise.” We are encouraging everyone to make some noise by vot- ing for the candidates of your choice. Understanding that by doing so, makes you the most powerful person on earth. Mainly because YOUR one (1) vote could determine who wins or loses an election.
Look around, if you like what you see, then find an excuse not to be present and be counted... but if you don’t, then be a part of the process of CHANGE. ‘Incredible change hap- pens when you decide to take control of what you do have power over’. You have the power to hold future and present politicians accountable for their actions.
In this election cycle, the offices
these candidates are vying for affect the lives of your family and friends. Remember, “action expresses priori- ties.”
The offices in the November elec- tion control budgets, control policy, and decide whether you get fair jus- tice or NOT. They make decisions in the U. S. government, Tallahassee and Hillsborough County.
The November election is crucial, so please vote.
The deadline to register or change party is October 5; Early Voting is October 19-November 1st. Vote By Mail ballots will be mailed September 24; and Elec- tion Day is November 3rd.
President and Vice President
The President and Vice President of the United States should have a mindset to represent and take care of ALL people. Not just the super rich, their friends and family and definitely not white supremacists. If the last 4- years weren’t enough, then get ready for more concentration camps. The person now occupying the White House has fueled racial hate, cut every program that has helped most Americans survive and continues to use his stage to push Hitler-like doc- trines. No-one has lived a perfect life...however, Joe Biden and Ka- mala Harris will give this country a chance to get back to goodness. Mr. Biden was a friend and positive force behind President Obama. And Sen. Kamala Harris has been a powerhouse from the minute go. Raised in a culturally diverse house- hold, she made a chose to attend a HBCU for college, and join a Black sorority while there (Alpha Kappa Alpha). She is also a member of The Links, Inc., another all-Black female organization. She is smart and well - liked by people who know her.
The Sentinel Editorial Board endorses Joe Biden and Kamala
Harris
A total of 470 seats in the U. S. Congress are up for election. All 435 seats in the U. S. House of Representatives are up for grabs and 35 in the U.S. Senate.
Representative in Congress District 12
The incumbent House member, Republican Mike Bilirakis is listed as an average Republican member of Congress, meaning he will vote with the Republican Party on the majority of bills according to Ballotpedia. He also voted NO to impeach President Donald Trump. His opponent, Kimberly Walker is a Black female veteran of the U. S. Army and Air Force. She is also a former defense department contractor and former Dept. of Corrections officer. She also has a Master’s degree in Information Technology. She was driven to run because she felt the country she served is heading in the wrong direc- tion, and has witnessed it firsthand with her close cousin dying because of the lack of healthcare.
The Sentinel Editorial Board endorses Kimberly Walker
Representative in Congress District 14
The incumbent Kathy Castor has served the community in Con- gress since 2006. Congresswoman Castor was instrumental in securing funding to bring several health clinics to underserved neighborhoods and funding to help the building of En- core. Over her 13 years in Congress, she was able to secure major monies through the Reinvestment Act to the Port, Tampa Airport, USF, Moffitt Cancer Center, and MacDill AFB. She also helped to bring an additional $3 Million to the Bay Area CBDG fund during the COVID pandemic.
The Sentinel Editorial Board endorses Kathy Castor
Representative in Congress District 15
The incumbent, Ross Spano lost the Republican primary to Scott Franklin, a U. S. Naval academy grad, so this seat is up for grabs. The Democratic Party is pushing to win this seat with Democratic opponent , Alan Cohn, a veteran investigative journalist. Not much can be said about either candidate because nei- ther one has ever held an elected of- fice.
The Sentinel Editorial Board endorses Alan Cohn
Representative in Congress District 16
State Representative Mar- garet Good is running against long- time Republican U. S. Representative Vern Buchanan. Good decided to switch from the state legislature to the halls of the U. S. Congress to challenge the staunch Republican who has voted with his party for the past 13 years. After col- lege, she worked at the United Way where she focused on helping families achieve financial stability and gain access to health care and early child- hood education programs. There, she gained critical experience reaching common ground between business leaders, local governments, schools, and faith organizations. Good at- tended the University of Florida Levin College of Law, where she served as editor of the Florida Law Review and graduated with honors.
The Sentinel Editorial Board endorses Margaret Good
State Attorney, 13th Judicial Circuit
Andrew Warren has been the county’s State Attorney for the past 4 years after beating the incumbent in 2016. Warren ran on a platform of ambitious criminal justice reform and has delivered on his major promises. His vision and leadership has benefit- ted our community by replacing out- dated criminal justice policies that has disproportionately incarcerated us. One of his primary successes has been reforming juvenile justice and reducing the number of kids being charged as adults. He also helped to create the pre-arrest civil citation program for first-time juvenile of- fenders that has kept 700-800 of them per year out of the system. Warren has also worked closely with community programs like Men of Vi- sion, Safe & Sound Hillsborough, G3 Life Applications, Boys & Girls Club. His goal has been to minimize poverty traps that entangle people in the system. One of the ways this has been implement is that his office has dismissed charges for driving with a suspended license where the suspen- sion was because someone couldn’t afford to pay civil fines and fees. Warren has also embraced treat- ment and rehabilitation over punish- ment and incarceration for community members who suffer from addiction and mental health is- sues. The ‘actions of change’ have been evident during Mr. Warren’s first stint as the State Attorney.
The Sentinel Editorial Board endorses Andrew Warren
