 Shadows Over Ginsburg Replacement
We join America and the world to mourn the pass- ing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Gings- burg. Moreover, we realize her death is eclipsed only by her life-long accomplishments on the battlefield of racial, gender and overall equality for all Americans.
However, Ginsberg’s untimely death has been super- seded by the unethical actions of both President Trump and leading Republican Senators Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham and their Republican cohorts who for us now pose two very compelling and ethical questions: (1) Who shall succeed her? And, (2) When and by whom will she be appointed. Already, Republican racism and unfairness are creeping under the table.
In February 2016, Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Gra- ham refused to accept any nomination to the Supreme Court by President Barack Obama for 293 days, the longest time between any other appointments, claiming it was “too close to the election” to replace Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who died in February 2016.
Their claim that their policy would be “to refuse to consider any nominee to the Supreme Court put for- ward by President Obama....,” arguing that the next President should be the one to appoint Scalia’s replace- ment.
Moreover, Republicans previously had filibustered many of Obama’s federal appointments for judgeships between 2009 and 2015.
Here we are today, only 39 days from the election and 105 days from the inauguration of a new President, and now the leading Republicans want to rush and push through the appointment of Supreme Court Justice Ginsberg’s replacement.
Indeed, Lindsey Graham said in 2016 that we could “call him on the position he was taking if he changed.”
Well, the only difference between 2016 and today is that Obama was Black and Trump is white, and there is less time before the election.
Senators McConnell and Graham, we are “calling” both of you on your very obvious unethical and racist ac- tions, plain and simple, which casts shadows over every- thing Supreme Court Justice Ginsberg stood for.
