Deputies Investigating Car Theft Involved In Fatal Shooting
SIDNEY RENEW
A 20-year-old Lakeland woman died after she al- legedly attempted to run over deputies. The incident took place Monday afternoon in Polk County.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, shortly before 12:30 p.m., deputies were investigating a report of a theft of a pick-up truck in the area, when a deputy noticed the stolen Ford F-250 in the woods off Lakeland Acres Road.
Two deputies began ap- proaching the truck on foot and observed a woman in her early 20s inside the vehicle.
The deputies ordered the woman to get out of the vehi- cle several times. The woman allegedly accelerated and drove directly towards the two deputies. Fearing for their safety and facing deadly force, both deputies fired at the suspect.
The woman, later identi- fied as Ms. Sidney Alexis Renew, was struck by the gunfire and died at the scene.
Neither deputy was struck by the truck or injured.
Both deputies were placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of four independent investiga- tions.
