   Auditorium Named In Honor Of Longtime Educator

On Wednesday, February 14th, at 4 p.m., mem- bers of the community and Hillsborough County School District will gather at Middleton High School for the official naming and unveiling cere- mony for the school’s auditorium.
The auditorium will officially bear the name of Henry “Shake” Washington, a recently retired educator.
The naming of the auditorium in his honor cul- minates the history Washington has with the high school.
A product of the Hillsborough County Public School District, Washington earned the nick- name “Shake” as an athlete. He was quarterback and co-captain of the Middleton High School foot- ball team. Washington was also a standout bas- ketball and football player for the school.
After graduating from high school in 1968, Washington received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Southwest Louisiana.
He returned to Tampa in 1976, and launched a career that spanned 42 years as an educator. Dur- ing his career, Washington taught Physical Edu- cation, Driver’s Education, and served as Coach for girls and boys basketball teams, being named as “Coach of the Year” in basketball.
He rose through the ranks of the school district, being appointed as Assistant Principal for Student
Affairs at Chamberlain High School, He later be- came principal at Chamberlain.
Middleton High School closed its doors in 1971. In August 2002, a newly constructed high school opened its doors in East Tampa, a few blocks from the original school. Washington was named its first principal and oversaw the opening.
After serving three years as Principal, he was ap- pointed Area Director for Area IV Schools. He re- tired after 42 years of distinguished service to Hillsborough County on July 1, 2017.
Washington is married to Mrs. Cheryl Byrd Washington and is the father of two adult chil- dren, Henry Washington, Jr., and Dr. JaMia Washington. The family worships at Allen Tem- ple A. M. E. Church.
