WGN America is officially out of the high-end original scripted series business. As expected, the cable network cancelled acclaimed drama Underground after two sea- sons.
In the wake of parent com- pany Tribune Media’s $3.9 billion planned acquisition by Sinclair Broadcast Group, the cable network is ending high- cost scripted originals. Re- portedly, the acclaimed series costs $5 million per episode and already has an SVOD deal with Hulu, which was a com-
plicating factor in finding a new home. According to a re- port, BET and OWN declined to pick up the show, due to its expensive cost.
Just hours after WGN an- nounced that it had canceled “Underground”, John Leg- end (one of the show’s pro- ducers) said that they would find a new home for the series.
Legend also tweeted:
‘Be wary of Sinclair though. They’re trying to make local stations mini Fox Newses, but more to the right.’
