Lone Juror Is Holdout In Case To Convict Former White Cop For Shooting Of Black Man

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- One juror in the Walter Scott mur- der trial apparently refuses to vote for a guilty verdict thereby deadlocking the jury in the high profile murder case.
The juror, identified only as a 50-year-old white male, told the judge Friday he could not “with good conscience approve a guilty verdict” against Michael Slager, the 35-year-old ex cop accused of murder in the death of Scott. Said juror also added that he was not about to change his mind, according to the Asso- ciated Press.
Slager, 35, is on trial for the April 2015 shooting death of 50- year-old Walter Scott. Scott was running from a traffic stop in North Charleston when Slager shot him five times in the back. In addition to the state murder charge, Slager faces three federal charges, including a civil rights violation.
The prosecution asked the judge to include an option for Slager to be charged with vol- untary manslaughter, and al- though the defense objected, the judge agreed.
The panel of one black and 11 white jurors has now deliberated for more than 16 hours over three days on whether to convict the former North Charleston po- lice officer.
After Judge Clifton Newton informed the court of a note from the jury on Friday saying they were “beat,” lawyers for Slager requested a mistrial.
Jurors are considering the charge of murder, which could carry a sentence of from 30 years to life in prison, and a lesser charge of voluntary manslaugh- ter, which carries a sentence of two to five years.
The judge ordered jurors to re- turn to the jury room on Mon- day. If the jury cannot reach a verdict, a mistrial will be de- clared.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN --- The announcement that Mall of America was welcoming its first Black Santa Claus was greeted in many quarters as a good thing but, as might be expected in a country that has become increasingly more comfortable saying any racist thing that comes to mind, many were highly offended. Mall of America hired Larry Jefferson, a retired U.S. Army veteran from Irving, Texas to spend four days at the mall listening to the wish lists of children of all colors.
According to the editorial editor of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, comments on black Santa became so offen- sive the paper shut down their online comments on the article about it.
“Looks like we had to turn comments off on story about Mall of America’s first black Santa. Merry Christmas everyone!” Scott Gillespie wrote.
That didn’t stop people whose world was rocked by a non-white Santa from finding other venues to rage against the Claus, including Twitter and other comment sections. As has become all too com- mon when conservatives are offended, a boycott has been called for, with Peter Mor- gan on CBS Minnesota writ- ing, “Stupid. Incredibly stupid. Santa is WHITE. BOYCOTT Mall of America. Maybe they should change their name to MALL of RAG- HEAD LAND.”

SAN MATEO, CA --- Dr. James Hutchinson has been practicing medicine as a family doctor in San Mateo, California for more than 60 years. In fact, he was Califor- nia’s first African American doctor. He remembers ex- actly how it was publicized in the local newspaper: “Negro MD Gets a Permit.”
Dr. Hutchinson credits his longetivity to having a sense of humor. He says that he found the newspaper arti- cle funny because it gave him just what he needed - free publicity. He also believes in giving to others. He sees pa- tients of all races, and has never turned anyone away because they couldn't pay.
Dr. Hutchinson received his medical degree in 1952 from Meharry Medical Col- lege School of Medicine, a historically Black college. He was the first doctor at the

rodeo at the Cow Palace! He was one of the founding doc- tors of Planned Parenthood and Project 90. His family was also the first Black family to move into the Hillsbor- ough area of San Mateo County.
California’s First Black Doctor Still Practicing At Age 93
TUSTIN, CA --- The sus- pects had no idea that the bottle of cough syrup perched on a shelf at a Tustin phar- macy contained something more than cough relief.
It wasn’t until the nonde- script package was removed from the small business by burglars that its secret ingre- dients went to work.
Concealed inside the bottle of cough syrup was a GPS de-
vice that began tracking the medicine thieves’ every move, according to police investiga- tors.
After days of tracking, un- dercover surveillance and ev- idence gathering investi- gators arrested Willie James Clark, 21, of Row- land Heights and Brian Vega Salinas, 20, of La Puente on suspicion of com- mitting the Nov. 10 burglary.
