Current Initiatives and Pep Rally Incorporated, area non-profits have teamed up with local artists to use art and expression to help clean up the community.
Jason Sowell, President and CEO of Current Initia- tives, said they have targeted laundromats in inner-city communities to be beneficiar- ies of a beautiful mural that says “Clean.”
One of the artist, Josh Pearson of Pep Rally, Inc, said they’ve seen the power of street art in a community and they wanted to bring it to as many places as they could.
“There’s a lot of tension that exists in communities all over the city, so we’ve created something that will break all boundaries and bring people together on all levels.
“The murals are part of the groups’ laundry project that gives monthly, free laun- dry service to families in need.”
Sowell said the laundry project is operated several times a month at different laundromats.
“The laundromats in Col- lege Hill and Sulphur Springs rotate every other month.
“We selected laundromats in areas we felt would best
serve citizens of low income. We actually meet with the owners to make sure the laundry is a place that’s clean, well kept, and has all of its equipment operating.”
Sowell said instead of ad- vertising what days citizens can take advantage of the free wash day, they mostly depend on word-of-mouth.
“What we do is show up with signs and banners two days before the free wash day. They tell people that particu- lar laundry facility is partici- pating in laundry day.
“We wanted to bring beautification to the neigh- borhoods, and our company sponsors cover all the costs.”
Right now, laundry day is available at these Laundro- mats:
Big Wash on Waters and Nebraska in Sulphur Springs
Big Wash in Ybor City on 34th Street and 7th Av- enue
Big Wash in East Tampa on Lake and 29th Street
Big Wash in West Tampa on Main Street, just west of Rome Av- enue.
The free laundry day is based on a first come, first served basis, and the organiz- ers cover the cost of washing and laundry supplies.
