Police Investigate Man’s Suspicious Death, Woman’s Severe Injuries

SUSPECT INSIDE ATM
The Tampa Police Depart- ment has arrested a man who robbed an elderly woman in- side an ATM machine.
According to police, the in- cident took place shortly be- fore 2 a.m., on May 1st at the Amscot, 8409 N. Florida Av- enue.
The suspect, later identified as 43-year-old Charles Omar McGee. McGee re- portedly lingered inside the business as the elderly victim withdrew money from the ATM machine. Once she had completed her transaction, the suspect attacked her and forcibly took all of the money she had withdrawn. He then fled the area on foot.
After the video of the rob- bery was released, McGee was identified by anonymous callers.
Police located McGee in the Hillsborough County Jail. He
SUSPECT OUTSIDE ATM
A 53-year-old Lakeland man died Sunday evening after im- paling himself with a knife. The incident took place at a Lowe’s Home Improvement Center in Plant City.
According to police, officers responded to a non-emergency shoplifting call in progress at the store. When the officers ar- rived they learned the man en- tered the store at 2801 James L. Redman Parkway, and re- moved a knife from its packag- ing. He then hid the knife on his body.
When Loss Prevention offi- cials confronted the man, later identified as Jerry Ellis Word, he is alleged to have brandished the knife in a threatening manner. Word then ran from the store on foot toward the Parks Springs Apartment Complex, police
saidP. olice believe that while Word was running with the knife, he impaled himself. After doing so, he continued running for a short distance before he collapsed behind a building.
Word was taken to an area hospital, where he died a short time later. The investigation is continuing, police said.

Police are currently investi- gating the death of a man found dead. The man’s girl- friend reported the death.
According to the St. Peters- burg Police Department, Ms. Alicia Chamberlain, 30, called 9-1-1 Thursday evening and stated that she awakened to find her boyfriend, identi- fied a 30-year-old James Allen, dead on the back porch.
Officers responded to 7726 34th Avenue, North around 5;41 p.m. Ms. Chamberlain also reported that she had se- vere injuries to her body, but did not know who injured her, police said.

When the officers arrived, they observed that the fence was locked in the back yard. They located both Ms. Chamberlain and Allen. She was transported to Bayfront Health Hospital, in critical condition. However, police said her injuries were not life-threatening and she is expected to recover.
Police said due to her con- dition, she had only been able to provide police with a brief statement.
The Major Crimes Unit is investigating the death. A spokesperson said police do not believe this was a random act of violence. The investiga- tion is continuing.
CHARLES McGEE
had been arrested on May 3rd on 3 out-of-county warrants. In addition to the warrants, McGee has also been charged with robbery. The bond on that charge has been set at $50,000. He is cur- rently being held without bond.

Fatal Shooting Of Bicyclist By Police Officer Under Investigation
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scammers posing as em- ployees of the Water Depart- ment. At least three cases have been reported since April 27th.
According to police, the im- posters have targeted elderly citizens in Seminole, Redington Beach, and unincorporated Pinellas County.
The suspects visit the victims posing as employees of the Water Department. The sus- pects tell the victims there is a water leak inside their homes to gain access. Once inside, one the suspects distracts the vic- tim while the other suspect re- moved jewelry and other valuables.
Detectives warn citizens not to allow anyone inside their homes without verifying they are who they say they are.
If someone suspects they are being targeted,. They are en- couraged to contact law en- forcement.
A Tarpon Springs off-duty officer shot and killed a man he said attacked him with a knife. The incident took place in downtown Tarpon Springs.
According to police, the off- duty officer was working a car show when visitors told him a white man riding a bicycle was acting suspicious. The of- ficer located the man at the corner of Tarpon and Safford, shortly before 2 p.m., Satur- day.
When the officer attempted to identify the man, later identified as Nicholas Provenza, 25, of Palm Har- bor, Provenza reportedly provided a false name.
When the officer asked for
his name again, the man re- portedly gave him a different last name. At that point, the officer was out of contact with the dispatcher.
The next time the officer came on the radio, he stated, “Shots fired,” then told the dispatcher, “He came at me with a knife.”
Provenza was transported to a local hospital, where he died a short time later. The officer was not injured.
Police said several people witnessed the encounter and that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is con- ducting the investigation into the fatal shooting. The name of the officer was not re- leased.
