Tampa Bay Black Press, Trailblazer Honored During Awards Ceremony

In commemoration with the 190th anniversary of the launch of the Black press, the Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists acknowl- edged local Black news out- lets at its annual Griot Drum Awards.
Attorney Jeraldine Williams, a Tampa native and one of the first Black stu- dents to graduate from the University of Florida and the first Black student in its jour- nalism program, was the keynote speaker.
The event was held Thursday, Nov. 9 at the Florida Aquarium.
The Griot Drum Awards acknowledges coverage of the Tampa Bay African American community by local journal- ists and grants scholarships
to some of the area’s best and brightest journalism stu- dents.
This year’s event com- memorated the 190th an- niversary of the founding of the Black press. Locally, Tampa Bay Association of
