The Hillsborough County School Board approved Phalen Leadership Academies (PLA) as the External Operator for 7 failing schools. Earl Martin Phalen is the Founder and CEO of George and Veronica Phalen Leadership Academies.
The University of South Florida selected Dr. Hay- wood L. Brown as its new Vice President For Diversity, Inclusion, & Equal Opportu- nity and Title IX Administra- tor. Dr. Brown began serving in his new capacity on July 1, 2018.
A Memorial Service was held for a popular West Tampa businessman. Mr. Ferrell Allan Melton, Sr., passed away on December 31, 2017. He was 83-years-old.
The family Mr. Herbert B. Holley paid tribute to his memory by establishing a scholarship in his honor. He was killed in a traffic accident nearly 2 years earlier while en route to work.
A popular Tampa woman who was known as “Mother” by those she met has died.
Mrs. Flossie Pittman was 85-years-old.
Brian Lamb, Executive Vice President, head of Wealth and Asset Management, Fifth Third Bank (NASDAQ: FITB), has been named to Savoy Magazine’s 2018 list of the Top 100 Most Influential Blacks in Corporate America.
Dr. Charles Canaan Williams, Jr., 70, was killed in a traffic accident. Dr. Williams worked as a lung cancer specialist for more than
45 years. He was employed at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, at the time of his death.
Mrs. Annie Lois Car- rington, passed away after a brief hospital stay. She was 101 years old.
Mrs. Anna Maria “Bon- nie” Ivery Beauford died following a brief illness. She was 60-years-old. A Tampa native, Mrs. Ivery Beauford was the daughter of the late Robert and Zenola Davis, Sr.
The Tampa Bay Lightning Foundation honored a local community activist for her contributions. Mrs. Chloe Coney was chosen as the 39th Lightning Community Hero for this season.
APRIL
The National Baptist Dea- cons Convention of America, Inc. and its Auxiliaries pre- sented a National Christian Service Award to Brother Theron James, Jr., of Tampa.
James received the award for an ongoing list of whole- some achievements and con- tributions to the Convention and his local community.
Members of the Tampa City Council elected a new Chairman for the upcoming year. Veteran Councilman Frank Reddick was chosen to lead the board.
Henry “Shake” Wash- ington, a retired educator, announced plans to seek the District 6 Seat on the Hillsbor- ough County School Board. The seat is currently held by April Griffin, who an- nounced last year that she would not seek re-election.
Tampa Attorney Karen Skyers announced her inten- tions to run for a state office. The position is being vacated by Attorney Sean Shaw, who is running for Attorney General.

Norman Harris, a local attorney, announced his can- didacy for public office. He
planned to run for the District 61 office, held by Sean Shaw. Attorney Rena J. Fra- zier resigned her role as Chief of Policy and Communication with the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office. She planned to pursue other inter-
ests.
More than three decades
ago, Thomas Forward de- cided to become a member of the Tampa Fire Department. He retired as the Tampa Fire Chief after 35 years of service.
The Tampa Bay Lightning Foundation honored another Lightning “Community Hero.” This time, the honor went to prominent Tampa attorney, Warren Hope Dawson.
The Hillsborough County Public School District was re- cently honored as the only School Board in the country to receive the RISE Award. A na- tional award, it recognized school b0ards for their com- mitment to ensuring an equi- table education for all children.
The Tampa Alumni Chap- ter of Kappa Alpha Psi Frater- nity, Inc. was honored as the “Southern Province Chapter of the Year.” The Chapter was also named “Reclamation Chapter of the Year” for the second con- secutive year.
In addition, Cedric Mc- Cray and David Christian were given the Polemarch Award for their contributions to the province and the frater- nity.
Members of Peace Progres- sive Missionary Baptist Church hosted their 2018 Community Health Fair. The event took place at 2607 E. 24th Avenue, Tampa.
