Family Honors Musician Killed In Accident With Scholarship
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Nearly two years ago, a Tampa man known through- out the Tampa Bay Area was killed in a traffic accident. Mr. Herbert B. Holley was en route to work when the accident took place on E. Hillsborough Avenue.
His widow, Mrs. Rose- Mary Holley said, “The Lord put this on my heart to do this. We were together for 45 years and he was just a special person.”
His son, Marquis said, “He was a singer, choir leader, musician, director, songwriter, and innovator of Gospel music in the Greater Tampa Bay region, his pas- sion for life, music, and fam- ily are what made him so beloved amongst fellow singers, churches, and indi- viduals inside and outside of the church.”
The family felt using something that he loved, music, is the best way to
honor his memory. This will be the “First Annual Herbert B. Holley Scholarship For The Arts.”
Students interested in applying for the scholarship must do so by May 4, 2018. The winner will be awarded the $1,000 scholarship on June 30th.
The theme for the com- petition this year is “What Does Music Mean To Me?” Students competing for the scholarship must submit an essay of 500 words or less to answer that question.
Students must also sub- mit their first and last name, telephone number, and email address.
The family feels that by presenting a scholarship in his name is an appropriate way to honor his legacy to the arts while furthering a child’s education. The schol- arship will be presented to one student each year.
A Tampa native, Mr. Holley attended the public
“He was very active in the community with music and gospel choirs,” his son stated.
Mr. Holley was sur- vived by his wife, Rose- Mary, and sons, Marquis and Roderic.
