Depending on what era you grew up in, soul music has been the one constant. Today’s 20 and 30-year-olds grew up listening to soul music through their parents, and the parents have never allowed those old tunes to gather dust.
On Saturday, November 28th (Thanksgiving Weekend), 1828 Entertainment will be presenting their first “1828 Soul Music Festival.”
Marlon Wright and his business partner/en- tertainment director, Lawrence Hires, have teamed up to bring artists to the area that still have a devout following and can still perform.
“We started working on this a year ago and in March we started putting it all together,” said Hires.
“This will be our first annual music festival, and we’re already talking about what to do next year.”
This year, Hires and Wright will be bringing in Betty Wright, Clarence Carter, Shirley Mur- dock, and Bishop Bullwinkle.
“We wanted to do this during the fall, because it will be an outdoor event,” said Hires.
“We wanted to make sure the weather would be right.”
The inaugural festival will be held at Water Works Park, 1710 North Highland Avenue (behind where the old police department once sat).
After promoting successful shows, one of them featuring Charlie Wilson, Wright and Hires got a feel for what the people in Tampa wanted.

“Since we started putting out the word about this festival, the response has been off the charts,” said Wright.
“We made sure to market the show on the grass- roots level, because that’s where our listening audi- ence will come from. People are hungry for this kind of entertainment.”
Wright said there is a big need for older mature entertainment, because that age dynamic has been ignored for a long time.
“We want people to have a great time, enjoy great music, and just remember the days of great soul music.
“Our goal is to be a major force in this area for bringing in quality entertainment. That’s how we’re going to cement our brand.”
Wright and Hires said they are planting the seed now for the show to grow bigger each year.
“We hope to get a bigger venue for the next show, and we want Tampa to host its own signature event,” said Wright.
“I want to give thanks to my brother, David Gay, for inspiring me to keep it going. He has always been a great motivator, and he’s always had his hand on the pulse of what the people want when it comes to music.”
Gates will open at 1 p. m. and the show will start at 2 p. m. and continue until 8 p. m., No coolers will be allowed, and there will be VIP table eating and preferred seating.
