IN LOVING MEMORY SERVICE
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 19- year-old man in connection with a traffic fatality. He was charged with leaving the scene of an acci- dent involving a death.
According to police, shortly before 3:30 p.m. last Friday, Gilbert Lorenzo Escobedo, of Ruskin, was driving his 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck when he became involved in a verbal al- tercation with Zachary Taylor Marcano, 21, of Ruskin. Police said the altercation took place on private property.
Escobedo left the area in an attempt to leave the altercation and drove away travelling north on 30th Street NE towards Shell Point Road. Police said Escobedo was travelling at approximately 70 miles per hour.
Marcano, who was riding a Kawasaki motorcycle, came from behind, riding at a high rate of speed. He is alleged to have drove along side the truck and

punched the driver’s rearview mirror before pulling in front of the truck. They were both travel- ling about 60 miles per hour, po- lice said.
Escobedo told police that as they approached the intersection of 19th Street, NE, Marcano al- legedly quickly downshifted and slowly suddenly. Escobedo told police that he was following too close and was not able to stop.
Escobedo struck the back of the motorcycle, causing Mar- cano to be ejected from the ve- hicle and he slid into the intersection of 19th Avenue NE.
A vehicle traveling westbound on 19th Avenue, NE then struck Marcano and the motorcycle. Marcano died at the scene.
Escobedo reportedly fled the scene after striking the motorcy- cle and drove to his residence. His truck was later discovered at his home and impounded.
The following day, Escobedo came forward and spoke with de- tectives about what had hap- pened. He was arrested and charged with one count of leav- ing the scene of an accident in- volving death.
Police said this was not a case of road rage and that the two men were acquaintances.
