Patterson, 25, did not at- tend the court proceedings in Brooklyn Supreme Court on Thursday — he previously said he wants to move on with his life.
Bill To Give Baltimore Investigators Police Power Stalls
Baltimore State Attorney Marilyn Mosby felt investiga- tors needed police power after the police officers involved in the death of Freddie Gray were not charged.
BALTIMORE, MD —- A Sen- ate committee has killed a bill that would have given police powers to investigators in the Baltimore State's Attorney's Of- fice, a move the city's top prose- cutor sought to improve investigations of police miscon- duct.
The legislation was one of a slate of proposals State's Attor- ney Marilyn Mosby put for- ward last fall that were aimed at helping her office better investi- gate and prosecute officers ac- cused of misconduct. Mosby cited the failure to convict any officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray as motivation.
The Baltimore prosecutors' office employs 11 investigators, seven of whom are retired police officers. The bill would allow them to carry guns, make ar- rests, serve search and seizure warrants and perform other law enforcement functions.
Charlotte’s Black Leaders Confront Korean Beauty Store Owner About Choking Of Black Customer
Sung Ho Lim is confronted by members of the NAACP and Na- tion of Islam after choking incident. Residents are protesting in front of his store.
PALMETTO, FL —- A Florida woman who was re- ported missing last week is dead and her daughter's boyfriend will be charged with her murder, police said Sunday.
Investigators said that 26- year-old Roy Nichols Jr. confessed to killing Tricia Freeman, 47, during an ar- gument at Freeman's home in Palmetto Tuesday.
Palmetto Police Chief Scott Tyler told reporters that Nichols Jr. recounted how Freeman said some- thing that "set him off." Tyler did not elaborate on how Freeman died.
Nichols Jr. and his girl- friend, Freeman's 21-year- old daughter Kayla Colyer,
fled after Freeman's death in her car. The vehicle was found Friday at a park in Ash- land, Ky., where it had been abandoned.
Nichols Jr. and Colyer were captured Saturday at a truck stop in W.Virginia, when a clerk recognized them from a news broadcast and alerted authorities.
Nichols Jr. will face charges of second-degree murder in Freeman's death, while Colyer will be charged with accessory to murder after the fact.
Tyler said the pair told authorities where they dumped Freeman's body, but did not elaborate except to say it was somewhere in Florida.
CHARLOTTE, NC —- Mem- bers of the NAACP and the Na- tion of Islam (NOI) confronted Sung Ho Lim, a Korean beauty supply store owner, after a cell phone video of him and his wife choking a Black woman went viral. Located in Charlotte, North Carolina, their store, Missha Beauty, mostly sells hair and skincare products for African Americans.
Ho Lim has accused the woman of attempting to steal eyelashes and has even filed charges against her, but the video footage does not show this at all. The video starts with the woman saying, “Check my bag. I’m telling you I don’t have it.” Next, Ho Lim and his wife can be seen attacking the
woman, wrestling her to the ground, and then putting her in a chokehold.
After apologizing inside his store to a crowd of angry civil rights leaders and protesters, one representive from NOI tells Ho Lim that “sorry is not hard to say.”
Next, a representative of the NAACP tells him that, “You came into this country to better your family? Well, we built this country on the backs of our people and you said in one sec- ond that we didn’t matter.”
Lim has not been charged and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said the woman accused of stealing “has not been identified or ar- rested.”
Noose Found Hanging At Middle School
Baltimore Police Find Missing Autistic Teen Lured Away By Online Predator
Kennedi High was found 5 days after she was reported missing.
ORLANDO, FL —- A rope tied into a noose was found hanging outside the Gotha Middle School in Orlando, Fla., prompting an investigation by the police.
According to the Associated Press, several students and staff members at Gotha saw the noose last Wednesday morning before it was removed. Orange County (Fla.) Public Schools of- ficials confirmed that police are investigating the incident and that whoever is found to be re- sponsible will be prosecuted.
Officials added that coun- selors would be available to talk to students and that extra secu- rity would be on hand.
It wasn’t immediately clear
what the noose was hanging from or whether any classes were canceled because of it.
Even though the Orange County Sheriff’s Office is re- viewing the incident, the spokesperson said it didn’t ap- pear to be a crime.
PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, MD —- Five days after she went missing, Balti- more investigators found an autistic Baltimore high school sophomore physically un- harmed in a Prince Georges County apartment complex, police say.
The search began almost immediately after Kennedi Simone High,16, a student at Western High School, failed to return home last week after class.
Her mother, Brandi Stallings, told Baltimore po- lice the behavior was “highly unusual” and out of character for her daughter, whom she describes as a high-function-
ing autistic person who tends to view the world and individ- uals in a positive light.
Knowing this about her daughter, Stallings took steps to protect her from on- line predators. She took away her daughter’s cell phone and moved the computer from the basement to the living room where she could closely mon- itor her daughter’s Internet usage.
But Kennedi still found a way to access an unnamed online dating app by borrow- ing her friend’s cell phone, police say.
The circumstances of her disappearance remain under investigation.
